DUNSTON WAR MEMORIAL

The Dunston memorial can be found at St. Peter's Church, Vicarage Lane, Dunston, Lincolnshire. The memorial takes the form of the clock on outside wall of the church tower with a dedicatory, rectangular, stone tablet with names, lower down on the tower. The memorial was unveiled on 2 April 1921 and the unveiling and dedication were attended by Councillor T.C. Halkes, Mayor of Lincoln, Revd. Walter Mayo Ede, Revd. E H Scott, Right Revd. William Shuckburgh Swayne. Listed are 14 names of those men who fell and then those who served. A reference is made to the Second World War without any names being listed.

BROWN Ernest Alfred Melville
(Ernest Alfred Melvine BROWN in some records) Private 12785, 7th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 2 March 1916, age 24. Born 7/5/1892, Kettleby, Lincs, bpt 7/8/1892 Bigby, Lincs, son of Mrs Hannah (née Lintin) Wray (formerly Brown), of Middle St, Dunston, and the late Richard Brown. Pre-war occupation waggoner on farm. Commemorated on Panel 21, Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
BROWN George Francis
Lance Corporal 21394, 7th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 23 April 1917, France. Born 11/4/1890, Kettleby, Lincs, son of the late Richard Brown & Hannah (née Lintin) Wray (formerly Brown) of Dunston. Pre-war occupation farm labourer. Enlisted 16/2/1916. Commemorated on Bay 3 and 4, Arras Memorial, France.
CAUNT Fred
Private 23204, 1st Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Accidentally killed 24 February 1917, age 24, by fellow soldier cleaning rifle. Enlisted 1916, Lincoln. Born 16/7/1892, bpt 4/8/1892 Dunston, son of the late John & Eliza (née Scarborough) Caunt. Husband of Alice (née Sawyer) Caunt of Nettleham, Lincs, father of George William & Fred Caunt. Pre-war occupation horseman on farm. Buried In Grave V. B. 27, Vermelles British Cemetery, France.
DAWSON Alec
(probably born Alledge DAWSON) Able Seaman No. Tyneside Z/5000, Hawke Bn. RN Div., Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Missing 3 February 1917, assumed killed in action, age 20. Born 8/11/1896 acc to service record, probably 8/11/1895, bpt 13/12/1895 Dunston. All records confirm son of Joshua and Josephine Dawson of Dunston (and Worksop, Notts & Doncaster, Yorks). Enlisted 2/6/15, previously a miner. Commemorated on Pier and Face 1A, Thiepval Memorial, France.
DRAGE Ernest
Private 47893, 2nd Bn. Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Killed in action 14 April 1918, age 29. Awarded Military Medal. Born 19/10/1888, bpt 11/11/1888 Dunston, son of John and the late Mrs Ann (née Foster) Drage of Foster's Square, Dunston. Commemorated on Panel 99 to 102, Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
KEW Charles Joseph William
Private 15196, 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 28 June 1916, age 27. Born 2/1890 Toynton All Saints, Spilsby, Lincs, bpt 23/3/1890, Toynton St Peter, son of Joseph William Kew of Dunston, and the late Mrs. Betsy Burt (née Toynton) Kew. Attested for militia March 1907. Pre-war occupation farm labourer. Buried in Grave I. H. 12, Albert Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
MERRYWEATHER Joseph
Private 38026, 1st Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment Died of wounds 4 October 1917, age 26. Born 6/11/1890 Branston Heath, son of the late George & Hannah (née Colton, later Carlton) Merryweather of Dunston. Pre-war occupation waggoner on farm. Buried in Grave XX. K. 20A, Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. Also commemorated on Dunholme W.M.
MOYSES Albert
Private 2747, 1st/8th Bn. Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Killed in action 14 October 1915, age 17. Born Dunston 12/1897, son of John William and Harriet Moyses, of Dunston. Enlisted Newark, 25/10/1914, claiming to be 18, actually 16. Pre-war occupation farm labourer. Commemorated on Panel 87 to 89, Loos Memorial, France.
PAULSON Harry Wright
Private 201163, 2nd/5th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 12 May 1918, age 22. Born 1895 Dunston, son of Harry Pask Paulson, of 2 Asylum Cottages, Bracebridge Heath, Lincoln, and the late Sarah Ann (née Wright) Paulson. Commemorated on Panel 31 to 34, Loos Memorial, France.
SMITH Frederick
Probably Private 241458, 2nd Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Died of wounds 31 July 1917, Belgium. Born 1896-7, Dunston Heath, son of the late William & Mary Ann (née Cracknell) Smith of Dunston. Commemorated on Panel 21, Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
SPENCER Lewis
Private 97990, 1st/6th Bn. Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Killed in action 1 September 1918, age 19. Born 11/2/1899 Dunston, son of George Thomas and Lilly Flora (née Bavin)Spencer, of Dunston. Enlisted Jan 1917, Lincoln, previous occupation munitions worker. Buried in Grave IV.F.6, Fouquières Churchyard Extension, France.
TINDALL James
Lance Corporal 13431, 7th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 3 November 1916, Belgium, age 21. Born 1896Q1, son of George & Ada (née Sayers) Tindall, of 26 Chapel Lane, Dunston. Commemorated on Pier and Face 1 C, Thiepval Memorial, France.
WHITE Arthur Edwin (or Edwin Arthur)
Private 16011, 7th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 20 February 1916, age 18. Born 1898Q1 Roughton, Lincs, son of Thomas and Annie Elizabeth (née Bell) White, of 3 Latham Place, Rasen Lane, Lincoln. Pre-war occupation farm worker. Commemorated on Panel 21, Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
WILSON Sidney Douglas
