IN MEMORY OF THE LACEBY MEN WHO FELL IN DEFENCE OF THEIR
KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919.

George
Arnold served as a Private, M2/266539, in the 728th MT Company of
the Royal Army Service Corps. He died on 25th February 1918 and
is buried at Hitchin Cemetery, Grave NE 572. He was born at Laceby
and enlisted at Pontefract.
His death certificate shows that he was a driver in the Army Service
Corps and died, age 29 years, from acute double lobar pneumonia
in the Military Hospital at Hitchin, Hertfordshire. George was married
to Emma and they lived at 16 Jubilee Road, Doncaster where he was
a draper’s assistant. |

Eustace
Robinson Bates served as a Private, 6328, in K Squadron, Household
Cavalry and Cavalry of the Line (including Yeomanry and Imperial
Camel) of the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen’s Bays) in France
and Flanders. He was killed in action on 1st September 1914 age
25 and is buried at the Verberie French National Cemetery, Oise,
France. He was born in India and was living at the Duke of York
School at the time he enlisted in London. Eustace was the son of
Jane Bates of 19 Priestgate, Barton-on-Humber and the late R D Bates. |

is believed that this is William Clowes Beswick who served as a
Private, 1138, in the 10th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment
in France and Flanders. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916
and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, Pier
and Face 1 C. He was born at Croxton and was living at Creswell,
Nottinghamshire at the time he enlisted at Grimsby. |

is believed that this is George Brown, 1104, who served as a Lance
Corporal in the 1st/5th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment in
France and Flanders. He was killed in action on 14th June 1915 and
is buried at the Packhorse Farm Shrine Cemetery, Heuvelland, West-Vlaanderen,
Belgium, Grave C 9. He was born in Grimsby and was living at Laceby
at the time he enlisted at Grimsby. |

King’s Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment), (formerly 23589, Lincolnshire
Regiment), in France and Flanders. He died of wounds on 24th October
1916 age 27 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme,
France, Pier and Face 5 D and 12 B. Fred was the son of Martha Elizabeth
Farmery of Laceby and the late John Farmery. He was born at Stallingborough
and enlisted at Grimsby. |

Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment in France and Flanders. He
was killed in action on 5th July 1915 age 18 and is commemorated

Panel 21. Albert was the son of Mr and Mrs Hackford of Cooper Road,
Laceby. He was born at Keelby and was living at Laceby at the time
he enlisted at Grimsby. |

is believed that this is Thomas Hinch who served as a Private, G/15438,
in the 9th Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment with the British
Expeditionary Force. He was killed in action on 21st March 1918
age 23 and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France,
Panel 46 and 47. Thomas was the son of John and Elizabeth Hinch
of North Kelsey, Lincoln. He enlisted at Grimsby. |

the West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales’ Own) in France
and Flanders. He was killed in action on 3rd September 1916 age

at Laceby and was living at Laceby at the time he enlisted at Grimsby. |

Kendall served as a Company Sergeant Major, 240030, in the 7th Battalion
of the Lincolnshire Regiment in France and Flanders. He was wounded
on 19th October 1918 and died of wounds on 21st October 1918 age
31. He is buried in the Awoingt British Cemetery, Nord, France,
Grave I A 8. Alfred was the son of Samuel and Mary Kendall of Laceby
and husband of Anne M Kendall of Melville, Saskatchewan, Canada.
He was born at Immingham and was living at New Cleethorpes at the
time he enlisted at Grimsby. |

of the Lincolnshire Regiment in France and Flanders. He was killed
in action on 12th October 1918 and is buried in the Fresnoy-le-Grand

son of Mrs H King of 21 Ayscough Street, West Marsh, Grimsby. He
enlisted at Grimsby. |

Sidney
Makins served as a Petty Officer Stoker, K/3372, in the Royal Navy
on HMS “Queen Mary”. He died on 31st May 1916 and is
commorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Reference 16. HMS Queen
Mary blew up with the loss of 1,266 crew and with only 9 survivors
during the battle of Jutland on 31st May 1916 after receiving direct
hits from the German ships Seydlitz and Derfflinger. |

Leonard
Crossley Norminton served as a Private, 44298, (formerly 22290 Lincolnshire
Regiment) in the 12th Battalion of the Prince of Wales’ (North
Staffordshire Regiment) in France and Flanders. He was killed in
action on 5th October 1918 age 23 and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert
Memorial, Comines-Warneton, Hainaut, Belgium, Panel 8. Leonard was
the son of Joseph and Hannah Norminton, of Gibraltar Lane, Laceby.
He was born at Grimsby and was living at Cleethorpes at the time
he enlisted at Grimsby. |

is believed that this is Christopher Olsen who served as a Private,
33, in the 10th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment in France
and Flanders. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 and is commemorated
on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier, Somme, France, Pier and Face 1C.
He was born in Grimsby and enlisted at Grimsby.
Edgar Christian Olsen is recorded as “They rest from their
labours” on the “Laceby Roll of Honour” of August

Edward Pawson served as a Sergeant, 28242, in the 2nd Battalion
of the Lincolnshire Regiment in France and Flanders. He was killed
in action on 21st March 1918 age 20 and was buried at the Epehy
Wood Farm Cemetery, Epehy, Somme, France, Grave V1 H 6. Henry was
the son of William and Olive Pawson, of Austin Garth, Laceby. |

Fred
Plaskitt, served as a Driver, 1530, in the 1st North Midland Brigade
of the Royal Field Artillery. He died on 22nd of May 1915 age 29
and is buried in Laceby Cemetery, Grave 293. The Laceby Cemetery
book shows that he died at Luton and was buried on 26th May 1915.
Fred was the son of John Plaskitt. He was living at Grimsby at the
time of his enlistment at Grimsby. |

Robert Rollinson served as an engineman, 1579ES, on H M Trawler
“Clifton”, in the Royal Naval Reserve. He died on 18th
Feburary 1917 age 27 and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial,
Kent. |

C Slatter served as a Corporal, 71695, in the A Battery, 28th Army
Brigade, Royal Field Artillery in France and Flanders. He was killed
in action on 20th May 1917 age 26 and is buried at the Nine Elms
Military Cemetery, Thelus, Pas de Calais, France, Grave I B 16.
Thomas was the son of Thomas and Mary Slatter of Grimsby and the
husband of Jane Thornton Slatter of The Terrace, Laceby. Tom was
born at Grimsby and enlisted at Grimsby. |

William Twidale served as a Private, 12659, in the 7th Battalion
of the Lincolnshire Regiment in France and Flanders. He died of
wounds on 28th April 1916 age 20 and is buried in Laceby Cemetery,
Grave 317. Roland was the son of William and Emily J Twidale of
Laceby, Grimsby. The Laceby Cemetery Book shows that he died at
Huddersfield War Hospital and was buried on 2nd May 1915. |

Regiment in France and Flanders. He was killed in action on 15th
August 1916 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais,

Corps in the Leicestershire Regiment. He died on 9th September 1944
age 59 and is buried in the Gradara War Cemetery, Italy, Grave 11
F 9. John was the son of Isaac Sharpley and Marion Bainbridge and
the husband of Ethel Kathleen Bainbridge. He was born in Lincolnshire
and lived at Kingsfield House, Laceby. |

Air Force. He died on 23rd May 1942 age 29 and is buried in the

Brannam of Grimsby. |

Pol in the Royal Naval Reserve. He died age 34 and is buried in
the Khartoum War Cemetery, Sudan, Grave 2 D 19. He was the son of
Albert and Mary Gregory and husband of Mary Rosina Gregory of Laceby. |

Edward Johnson served as a Private, 102164, in the Pioneer Corps.
He died on 17th June 1940 at sea and is commemorated on the Dunkirk
Memorial, Nord, France, Column 152. He died when RMS Lancastria
was sunk by German aircraft off St Nazaire, France with a loss of
life of 5,200 and only 972 survivors. Robert was the son of Mr and
Mrs Alfred Johnson of Cottagers Plot, Laceby and husband of Mrs
R Johnson. |

Lealand served as a Leading Aircraftman, 641243, in the Royal Air
Force. He died on 23rd April 1945 and is buried in the Labuan War
Cemetery, Malaysia, Grave T E 4. |
LAURIDSON |

John William Lauridson served as an Engine Room Artificer 4th Class,
D/MX 66032, on HMS Mahratta, Royal Navy. He died on 25th February
1944 age 21 when HMS Mahratta, a destroyer, was sunk by an acoustic
torpedo from a U-Boat in the Barents Sea, in the Arctic with heavy
loss of life. He is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial,
Devon, Panel 89, Column 1. John was the son of John William and
Margaret Phyllis Lauridson of Cottagers Plot, Laceby. |

Fred
William Parker was a Cabin Boy on the SS Montreal City (Bristol),
Merchant Navy. He died on 12 December 1942 age 18 when the SS Montreal
City, 3,066 tons, was torpedoed and sunk in the North Atlantic with
all hands. He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London,
Panel 71. Fred was the son of Percy Hinchliffe and Elisabeth F Parker
of Laceby. |

Wilson
Frederick Tutty served as a Marine, CH/X 3444, on HMS
Curacoa. He died age 21 on 2nd October 1942 and is commemorated
on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent, 65 3. He was the son of Vera
Milsom Tutty of Laceby. HMS Curacoa was tragically lost when it
was hit by the Queen Mary when rounding Ireland and snapped in two.
338 of the 439 men aboard were lost. |

Wright served as a Sergeant Air Gunner, 1591386, in the Royal Air
Force Volunteer Reserve. He died on 5th October 1944 age 19 and
is buried in the Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery,
Egypt, Grave 0 64. Len was the son of Harry and Sarah Ann Wright
of Laceby. |
