MANBY WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The war memorial for World War 1 only is to be found on the left hand wall inside St Mary’s Church, Carlton Road, Manby. It is in the form of a wooden plaque, ornately decorated with a further brass plaque inset containing the inscription and the names of the fallen. The memorial is split into three columns, two columns list those who served and one column lists those who gave their lives. There is no memorial to those who died in World War 2 but there are several graves in the churchyard (see below).

AYSCOUGH

George

Corporal 1907, 1st Infantry Battalion – 5th Reinforcements, Australian Imperial Force. Enlisted 30/01/1915, age 28, at Liverpool, New South Wales. Embarked 25/06/1915 on ship HMAT Ceramic No. A40 from Sydney. Died 11/08/1915 on the hospital ship Dunluce Castle at sea, of a gunshot wound to the head received in action on 06/08/1915 at the Battle of Lone Pine. This was against the Turkish forces from 06/08/1915 to 09/08/1915, and one of the most important assaults of the Gallipoli campaign. Buried at sea between ANZAC Alexandria and Malta on 11/08/1915. Commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial (13), Turkey, and on Panel 28 of the Australian War Memorial, Canberra. Born Manby, son of Thomas (a farmer) and Mary Ayscough of Saltfleetby Road, Manby. At the time of enlistment he was single and working as a station hand at Landgrove sheep station, Cootamundra, New South Wales. Prior to emigration he had been a policeman in the Lincolnshire Constabulary.

John

Private 14817, 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Enlisted Louth, resident of Manby. Killed in action 21/03/1918. Buried in Buried in Grave VIII, F7, Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-Le-Grand, Somme, France. Born Grimoldby 1895, son of Henry Albert (a farmer) and Susannah Coot of North View, Manby (see Cheffins and Coot, below).

EDWARDS

Henry Giles

Private 26413, 2nd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Enlisted Lincoln, resident of Manby. Killed in action 16/08/1917 age 31. Commemorated on Panels 35 to 37 and 162 to 162A of the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. Tyne Cot is one of four memorials to the missing in Belgian Flanders which cover the area known as the Ypres Salient. Born 1886 Manby, son of Stephen (a groom and gardener) and Mary Edwards. Husband (married 1912) of Lizzie (nee Goodhand) Edwards of Manby (see below).

KIRK

John Phillips

Private 202025, D Company, 2nd/5th Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own). Enlisted Louth. Killed in action 03/05/1917, probably during the Arras offensive of April-May 1917. Commemorated on Bay 4 of the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. Born Manby 1894, son of John (a blacksmith) and Selina (nee Phillips) Kirk.

Born 1891 Leeds, son of John George (born Partney, died 1891 Leeds) and Susannah (nee Burnett, born Louth) Cheffins. Stepson of Henry Albert Coot who married the widowed Susannah Cheffins in 1894. Stepbrother of John Coot (see above) and of Albert Coot (see below).

Private 108361, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment. Born 1899 Grimoldby, son of Henry Albert (a farmer) and Susannah Coot, brother of John Coot (see above) and stepbrother of William Henry Cheffins (see above).

Born 1883 Owston, Leicestershire, son of Stephen and Mary Edwards and brother of Henry Giles Edwards (see above).

Possibly Gunner/Bombardier 66613, Royal Field Artillery or Battery Serjeant Major/Acting Warrant Officer Class 2 5262, Royal Field Artillery. In the 1901 Census there was a Walter Lowery, age 19 born Lincs, at the Preston Barracks, Sussex, listed as a Gunner in the Royal Field Artillery. Born 1883 Little Carlton, son of Charles (a farm worker) and Rachel (nee Baxter) Lowery.

Gunner 186890, Royal Horse Artillery. Born 1893 Manby, son of William (a cottage farmer) and Emma (nee Coot) Wherry of Manby.

Frederick Thomas

Probably Private 204222, West Yorkshire Regiment & Private 236990, Northumberland Fusiliers. Born 1896 Louth, son of John Frederick (Corporation labourer and later landlord of the Plough public house in Manby) and Maria Jane (nee Turner) Windley.

     

In August 1938, RAF Manby opened as a training station housing No. 1 Air Armament School and subsequently the Empire Central Armament School, which opened early in 1943. It became the RAF Flying College in 1946 and then the College of Air Warfare until its closure in 1974. Inevitably there were accidents, some of which involved fatalities. In St Mary’s Churchyard there are 29 Second World War Graves – 20 RAF airmen, of whom two have not been identified, one member of the ATC, three Canadians, one Australian, one New Zealander and three Polish airmen.

Birmingham, of Dwellingup, Western Australia. Born 30 Jan 1921 Fremantle, Western Australia. Enlisted Perth, WA. Also commemorated on panel 119 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra.

The Polish Air Force was a significant part of the allied air force in World War 2 with a substantial presence in Lincolnshire.
