The
war memorial for Market Deeping can be found within the parish church
of St Guthlac, Market Deeping. It takes the form of two stone tablets
affixed to one wall of the church, World War 1 above World War 2 and
above these service flags. The first tablet contains the names of those
for World War 1 (25 names) with the inscriptions and two slate stone
tablets inset with the names. The second is a black slate tablet with
the names inscribed for World War 2 (4 names). The memorial was dedicated
on 1 December 1920.

enlisted Northampton. In the 1911 census he was a boarder with
Samuel Davis, unmarried, aged 28, a Rural Postman, born SCUNTHORPE,
Northants, resident 3 Halfleet Cottages Halfleet Market Deeping.
He married married Martha Davis, daughter of Samuel Davis, in
1911 before going off to war in 1914 (Bourne Registration District
April-June Quarter 1911 Vol 7A Page 921). In 1901 he was a servant
of george Tomlin (a widower), unmarried, aged 18, an Assistant
Carrier, Born SCUNTHORPE and resident at 6, Alfred Street,
Rushden. No known grave. Commemorated on LE TOURET MEMORIAL, Pas
de Calais, France. Panel 28 to 30.

from Peterborough Advertiser 3 April 1915
Another loss of the Deepings
News was received by Mrs T. Ellis of Market Deeping on Tuesday
last week of the death of her husband Private T. Ellis of C Company,
Northamptonshire Regiment; the following notification being received:
I am sorry to inform you that your husband Pte. Ellis of C Company
was killed in action on the 10th of March 1915 whilst the Battalion
was taking part in attack on the Germans – F. W. Laud Company
Sergeant Major. `C Company 2nd Northamptonshire France. Private
Ellis who has seen five years’ service in India was a reservist
and a typical soldier. He leaves a widow and two young children
to mourn loss, for whom much sympathy is manifest by all who knew
him.
The
deceased soldier was home for a few days at Christmas in the best
spirits. This casualty makes the third Deeping man who has been
killed in action in the present war.

By 1911 he was lodging with his grandparents, Gill and Ann Tingey,
in Market Deeping, Lincs. Enlisted in Lincoln 11-05-17. Served on
the Western Front from 31-03-18. Son of John William Green and Flora
Green (nee Tingey; born Witcham, Ely), of Stamford Road, Market
Deeping, Lincs. Married in Market Deeping on 24-08-1893. Buried
