War
Memorial at St. Mary’s Church, Stow-in-Lindsey (‘Stow Minster’)
is in the form of a carved wooden panel with incised gold lettering,
on the wall of the South Transept. The last two World War 1 names seem
to have been added much later, since they are not only below the ‘RIP’,
but in the same lettering style as the World War 2 names. The main World
War 1 list seems to be arranged in order of date of death (see partially
researched list below). However the last two names do fit this pattern,
being the two latest dates - perhaps they were either omitted from the
initial carving of the panel, or the bottom of the original panel was
damaged or removed when the WW2 names were added, and so had to be recarved.
A lot of men appear from Sturton-by-Stow. The lists here have been sequenced
for ease of reading.

Note:
An accident occurred on the night of 31st January 1918 when ten
K boats were operating with battle cruisers on a night exercise
off May Island. During the night, the helm in K14 jammed to starboard
and she swung round and collided with K22, which was actually the
K13 renamed after she had drowned most of her crew on her maiden
voyage. The two boats locked together and in a series of collisions
K4 was sunk by K6 (losing all hands), and K7 was sunk by HMS Fearless
(also losing all hands). Four other submarines were damaged.
