WOLABY WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is located in Main Street, Worlaby, on the east side of the village by the roadside and is made of granite, taking the form of squat pillar topped by a draped urn on a three stepped plinth. There are ten names for World War 1 and one for World War 2. The memorial was unveiled by Lieutenant-Colonel Harold Graham Wilson on 23rd May 1920; it cost £151 2s 4d and was manuafactured by Messrs. King and Sons. The memorial was repaired and relettered by Worlaby Parish Council in 1991.

BATCHELOR

Luke

[Memorial states Sapper, Royal Engineers 1914-1919.] Private 15232, 9th Service Battalion (Pioneers), South Staffordshire Regiment. Died of influenza in Italy 4 November 1918. Aged 27. Born Brinkhill, Lincolnshire, resident Skegness, Lincolnshire, enlisted Brigg, Lincolnshire. Son of Jesse and Bessie Batchelor, of Brinkhill, Alford, Lincs. Born in September 1892 in Brinkhill, Lincs., the eldest child of four, the son of Jesse and his wife Mary Ann (nee Marriot). His two brothers died in infancy and his sister died in 1902. His mother died in 1899 and his father remarried in 1900 to Amy Elizabeth (Bessie) Sellars and soon afterwards another daughter Lillie was born. Jesse, the father died when the new baby was only a few months old. Buried in CREMONA TOWN CEMETERY, Italy. Row E. Grave 3.

Private G/19495. 7th Battalion, Queens Own (Royal West Kent Regiment), formerly 82152 Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Killed in action 12th October 1917, aged 22 years. Son of Fred and Fanny Duffill of White House, Worlaby, Lincs. Born Tipperary, Cork, Ireland, enlisted and resident Lincoln, Lincs. Commemorated TYNE COT MEMORIAL. Panel 106 to 108.

Private 42217. 6th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment, formerly 46946 South Staffordshire Regiment. Killed in action 18th September 1918, aged 18 years. Son of Fred and Fanny Duffill of White House, Worlaby, Lincs. Born Worlaby, enlisted Scunthorpe and resident Winterton or Broughton, Lincs. Commemorated VILLERS HILL BRITISH CEMETERY, Villers-Guislain.II.B.6.

Private 40682. 9th Battalion, Essex Regiment, formerly 25185 Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 17th July 1917. Born Worlaby, enlisted Scunthorpe and resident Worlaby, Lincs. Commemorated ARRAS MEMORIAL. Bay 7.

Private 62510. 4th Battalion, Prince of Wales (North Staffordshire Regiment). Killed in action 20th October 1918, aged 23 years. Son of Mr J.H Hoodlass of Cabourne, Caistor, Lincs. Born Gainsborough and enlisted Grimsby, Lincs. Commemorated STASEGEM COMMUNAL CEMETERY. A.5.

Private 40154. 1st Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, formerly 13633 Training Reserve. Killed in action 24th April 1917. Born Winteringham and enlisted Brigg, Lincs. Commemorated ARRAS MEMORIAL. Bay 9.

Stoker 1st Class K/36517. HMS Torrent, Royal Navy. Died 23rd December 1917, aged 37 years. Son of Septimus and Elizabeth Neave of Goxhill, husband of Minnie Neave of Saxby All Saints, Lincs. Commemorated PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL. 26.

L/Corporal 7669. 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment Monument indicates joined 1905, killed in action 25th October 1914. Born Barton-upon-Humber, enlisted Lincoln and resident Worlaby, Lincs. Commemorated LE TOURET MEMORIAL. Panel 8.
