FLEET
AIR ARM MEMORIAL
The
memorial stands on the north bank of the Embankment opposite the London
Eye and takes is in the form of Daedalus as an allegory (Victory) memorial
in the City of Westminster, Charng cross, Greater London. It was designed
and sculpted by James Butler, the architects were Trehearne and Norman.
It was unveiled 1 June 200 by H.R.H. Prince of Wales, K.G. and commemorates
First World War (1914-1918), Second World War (1939-1945), Korean War
(1950-1953), Falklands Conflict (1982), Gulf War (1990-1991). It shows
the figure of an aviator in the guise of Daedalus, arms rasied and bearing
outstretched wings standing on a plinth with incised inscriptions on
either side and on the base. There is a gilded dedication, motto, and
Fleet Air Arm wings on the plinth. The memorial cost £350,000.
