Private G/8442, 2nd Battalion, Duke of cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment). Killed in action 1 July 1916. Aged 31. Born 26 February 1885 at 11, Enfield Road, Brentford, Middlessex. Son of William Richard and Mary Jane Steer and husband of Mary Anne Steer of Pangbourne. Resident Ealing, Middlesex. Baptised 28 August 1892 in Brentford, St. Paul. Married Mary Ann Head 26 December 1908 in Pangbourne Parish Church, Berkshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 26, born Brentford, a Plasterer, married to Mary Anne Steer, resident 49 New Road, Brentford, Middlesex. Enlisted in army 1914 World War 1, in Hounslow, in 3rd Battalion, Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge’s Own) transferred during 1915 from 3rd to 2nd Battalion who landed at Le Havre 4 November 1915 and spent the rest of World War 1 on the Western front. No known grave. Commemorated at THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. ier and Face 12 D and 13 B.

Note: The Steer family were associated for many years with Brentford FC. His father William Richard Snr was groundsman and player as was his brother William Richard Jr.
Sidney's brother Beattie played for the club in the early 1900s and and was a steward for many years until the 1960s as was his brother Stanley Victor. Sidney as a young lad helped mark out the pitch with his father and Beattie and appears in the first ever team photo of the club officials and players in 1894.
He may also have played for the club, unfortunately many of the early club records were lost in a fire in the 1960s.
