LALEHAM WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is located at the junction of Broadway and Shepperton Road, on a small island in the carriageway, Laleham. The memorial takes the form of a brick and stone base surmounted by tapering shaft and cross that as has an ornate carved design on it; the names can be found in relief on the tablets on three sides of the plinth; there is a foliate design carved on the front face of the cross with ram carved at the centre of the cross piece. There are 10 names for World War 1 and 17 names for World War 2.

Gunner 61837, 121st Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died Friday 9 February 1917. Aged 28. Born and resident Laleham, enlisted Staines, Middlesex. Son of Edward William and Catherine Jane Attfield, of High Elms Lodge, Laleham, Middlesex. Attested at Staines 25 October 1915, aged 26 years 333 days, a labourer, religious denomination Church of England, unmarried, height 5 feet 9 inches, chest 35½ inches, joined at Dover 27 October 1915, posted 5 November 1915, posted 2 depot 3 February 1916, posted overseas 9 February 1916. Buried in ECOIVRES MILITARY CEMETERY, MONT-ST. ELOI, Pas de Calais, France. Plot IV. Row C. Grave 25.
BINGHAM David Cecil 
Lieutenant, 3rd Battalion, Coldstream Guards. Killed in action Monday 14 September 1914. Aged 27. Son of Major-General the Hon. C.E. Bingham, C.V.O., C.B.; husband of Lady Rosabelle M. Bingham. No known grave. Commemorated on LA FERTE-SOUS-JOUARRE MEMORIAL, Seine-et-Marne, France.

BINGHAM, DAVID CECIL, Lieut., 3rd Battn. Coldstream Guards, yr. s. of Major-General the Hon. Cecil Edward Bingham, C.V.O., C.B., by his wife, Rose Ellinor, dau. of the late James Alexander Guthrie, of Craigie, co. Forfar;. and gdson. of George, 4th Earl of Lucan, K.P. ; b. 18 March, 1887 ; educ. Eton, and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst ; was gazetted 2nd Lieut. Coldstream Guards 29 Aug. 1906, and promoted Lieut. 14 March, 1909, being Adjutant to his regiment from 1 July, 1911, to 14 Jan. 1912 ; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders, and was killed in action at the Battle of the Aisne 14 Sept. 1914. He m. 12 Feb. 1912, Rosabelle Millicent St. Clair-Erskine, only dau. of James Francis Harry, 5th Earl of Rosslyn, and had a dau., Rose, b. 1913.

LIEUTENANT DAVID CECIL BINGHAM, 3rd BATTN. COLDSTREAM GUARDS, who was killed in action on the 14th September, 1914, during the battle of the Aisne, was the younger son of Major-General the Hon. C. E. Bingham, C.V.O., C.B. (second son of the 4th Earl of Lucan), now Commanding the 1st Cavalry Division, British Expeditionary Force. He was born on the 18th March, 1887, and was educated at Eton, and the R.M.C., Sandhurst, receiving his commission in the Coldstream Guards in August, 1906, and becoming Lieu-tenant in March, 1909. In July, 1911, he was appointed Adjutant of his battalion. Lieutenant Bingham married, in 1912, Lady Rosabelle Millicent St. Clair-Erskine, only daughter of the 5th Earl of Rosslyn, and left a daughter. Rose, born 1913.

BURT Lionel Charles 
Rifleman 6612, 16th Battalion, Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort's Own). Killed in action Thursday 21 March 1918. Born and resident Laleham, enlisted Aldershot, Hampshire. Married Lily Taylor in 1916 in Staines Registration District. In the 1901 census he was aged 11, born Laleham, resident with his widowed grandmother, at The Common, Village, Laleham, Staines, Middlesex. In the 1911 census he was aged 21, born laleham, unmarried, visiting in Laleham, Middlesex. No known grave. Commemorated on POZIERES MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Panel 81 to 84.
CHAPLIN Cyril 
Corporal 2548, 9th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment. Died of wounds in the Northampton Registration District Monday 20 August 1917. Aged 24. Born Witham, Essex, enlisted Egham, Surrey. Son of Henry James and Caroline Chaplin, of Bridge St., Witham. His younger brother Harry Chaplin also fell. In the 1901 census he was aged 7, born Witham, Essex, resident with his parents at Victoria Cottage, Witham, Braintree, Essex. In the 1911 census he was aged 18, born Essex, an Domestic Under Chauffer, boarding at High Barn, Bothy, Godalming Rural, Surrey. He attested at Egham on 4 September 1914, aged 21, occupation Driver, born Witham, Essex, height 5 feet 8 inches, chest 39 inches, weight 153 lbs. Buried in North-West part of WITHAM (ALL SAINTS) CHURCHYARD, Essex. Also commemorated on Witham All Saints memorial.
FEAR Robert [Stanley]
[Memorial states Royal Air Force] Second Lieutenant, 15th Squadron, Royal Flying Corps and 5th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment. Died of wounds received in action 5 March 1918, wounded 1 March 1918. Born 28 May 1898 and baptised 20 November 1898 at Walthamstow, Essex, son of William henry and Avis Fear. Attended Windsor Street Church of England / Council School, Chertsey (infants) School in 1901. In the 1901 census he was aged 2, born Walthamstow, Essex, resident with his widowed mother at Beeton Croft Villas, Stepgates, Chertsey, Surrey. Next of kin Miss Avis Dear, of 6, Kensington Square, London S.W., his sister. Passed as pilot 9 May 1917. Buried in ROCQUIGNY-EQUANCOURT ROAD BRITISH CEMETERY, MANANCOURT, Somme, France. Plot X. Private G/17348, 11th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. Killed in action Wednesday 3 April 1918. Born Ashford, Middx. (sic), enlisted Staines. Son of Frederick and Emily Honey, of Laleham. In the 1901 census he was aged 3, born Ashford, Middlesex, resident with his parents, Frederick and Emily Honey, in Ashford Road, Village, Laleham, Staines, Middlesex. In the 1911 census he was aged 13, born Laleham, at school, resident with his parents in Laleham, Middlesex. No known grave. Commemorated on POZIERES MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Panel 46 and 47.
MASON Jethro George 
Private 26331, 1st Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). Killed in action Sunday 23 July 1916. Born, circa 1889, and resident Laleham, enlisted Staines. Son of George and Jane Mason, of Laleham. In the 1901 census he was aged 11, born Laleham, resident with his parents, on The Common, Village, Laleham, Staines, Middlesex. In the 1911 census he was aged 21, born Laleham, a Domestic Gardener, unmarried, resident with his parents, George and Jane Mason, on Laleham Common, Laleham, Middlesex. STAUFFER Robert 
[Memorial states Trooper, Kent Yeomanry] Lance Corporal 13355, 3rd/1st Battalion Mounted Rifles, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Died of wounds (general blood poisoning) Saturday 19 May 1917 while a Prisoner of War of the Germans, first taken 30 March 1916. Aged 27. Born Lausanne, Switzerland, enlisted Hounslow, Middx., resident Ashford, Middx. Son of Juiles Stauffer, of Lallsanne, Switzerland; husband of Margaret Grace Stauffer (nee Lint), of 24, Sutherland Avenue, Sunbury-on-Thames, Middlesex, married 15 April 1914 in Paddington, one son, Robert Cecil Stauffer born 14 November 1915. In the 1911 census he was aged 22, born Lausanne, single, a servant (Footman), resident 36, Queen's Gate Terrace, Kensington, London. Attested 24 July 1916 at Hounslow, resident Cloutrig, Chesterfield Road, Ashford, Middlesex, aged 25 years 8 months, occupation Butler, married, height 5 feet 9¾ inches, chest 36½ inches, weight 133 lbs.
