The
Roll of Honour is hand painted and beautifully illustrated. St Luke's
is a parish in the Finsbury division of the hundred of Ossulstone, county
Middlesex, 1 mile north of St. Paul's. It was anciently part of St.
Giles's, Cripplegate, and is now included within the metropolitan borough
of Finsbury. The area is based roughly
around the north of Old Street. See a short description
of the area.
The Roll of Honour is to be found in St Luke's Community Centre at 90
Central Street, London, EC1V 8AJ where it hangs in one of the meeting
rooms.

Short
description of the St Luke's area
St
Luke's was a large, crowded parish in Old St, EC1, just beyond the
wall, on the north side of the City of London. The church was built
circa 1730 as part of a programme to provide for the increasing
population, particularly to relieve the adjoining parish of St Giles
Cripplegate. The roof was taken off in 1959, as the building had
become unsafe and the parish was reunited with St Giles Cripplegate.
The shell of St Luke's is still there, with its distinctive spire
in the shape of an obelisk, in its churchyard.
The
area generally known as St Luke's is bounded by Goswell Rd, City
Rd and the northern City boundary. It was part of the Borough of
Finsbury, and is now part of the London Borough of Islington. The
London Metropolitan Archives has most of the church's records, but
some vestry records are held by the Islington Local Studies Archives.
St
Luke's was a registration district for Biths, Marriages and Deaths
and the census from 1837 to 1869, when it became part of the Holborn
Rd.
Rahere
St was in Finsbury, between Morland St and Lever St, but seems to
have been redeveloped since the war with a school on the site. Bartholomew
Square is adajacent to the church, to the west. Charles Booth's
survey shows it as a very mixed area about 1889. |
