Wingate.—Capt. Allen Sievwright Wingate, 1st Batt. Gordon Highlanders, died of wounds received in action Dec. 11th, 1899, at Magersfontein. He was the son of J. B. Wingate, Esq., of Crown Terrace, Glasgow, was born in Dec., 1870, and educated at Loretto School, Musselburgh, where he played in the football XV. He was also a first-class cricketer and very fond of games. He entered the Gordon Highlanders in March 1891, being promoted lieut. Sept., 1893, and capt. May, 1899. He served with the Chitral Relief Force under Sir Robert Low, in 1895, with the first battalion of his regiment, including the storming of the Malakand Pass, receiving the medal with clasp. He saw service in the campaign on the North-West Frontier of India under the late Sir William Lockhart, in 1897-98, with the Tochi Field Force, when he was attached to the 3rd Batt. Rifle Brigade. He afterwards went through the campaign with the Tirah Expeditionary Force, with the 1st Batt. Gordon Highlanders, and was present at the capture of the Sampagha and Arhanga Passes, and in the subsequent operations in the Maidan, Waran, and Bara Valleys, receiving two clasps. Capt. Wingate embarked for South Africa in Oct., 1899, with his battalion, which joined the Kimberley Relief Force shortly before the battle of Magersfontein, in which he fell.
