in March 1891, being promoted lieut. Sept., 1893, and capt. May,
1899. He served with the Chitral Relief Force under Sir Robert

the storming of the Malakand Pass, receiving the medal with clasp.
He saw service in the campaign on the North-West Frontier of India
under the late Sir William Lockhart, in 1897-98, with the Tochi
Field Force, when he was attached to the 3rd Batt. Rifle Brigade.
He afterwards went through the campaign with the Tirah Expeditionary
Force, with the 1st Batt. Gordon Highlanders, and was present
at the capture of the Sampagha and Arhanga Passes, and in the
subsequent operations in the Maidan, Waran, and Bara Valleys,
receiving two clasps. Capt. Wingate embarked for South Africa
