CASTON WAR MEMORIAL

The Caston war memorial stands in the centre of the village and takes the form of a stylised Celtic cros, with circles and lead shapes carved into the arms of the cross, on a plinth with a two stepped base. There are 15 names for World War 1 and 3 for World War 2. There is also a Roll of Honour Book for the whole of Norfolk, the names from this book are also transcribed here.

Harry Green, born c1877 Norwich the son of Alfred and Ellen Green and Grandson of Robert and Lydia Green, present Caston 1881/1891 (note: full name would appear to be Harry John Green with birth recorded Norwich District 1876).

[Listed as G R Curtis on memorial, initials are a mistake and should read Robert Geoffrey Curtis.] Leading Aircraftman 907672, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 9th June 1945. Born 1919, the son of Robert Rowland and Lily Curtis (nee Day) of Stow Bedon, Norfolk. Buried Harare (Pioneer) Cemetery. EUR War Graves Plot. Grave 170.

Probably Reginald James Lawes, with parents in Norfolk 1911 (born Cawston), other possibilities appear no Norfolk connection.

Gunner 993875. 65 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery. Died 22nd March 1943, aged 32 years. Son of Harry William and Rosa Lawes. Younger brother of John Henry Lawes (refer WW1). Missing and commemorated Medjez-El-Bab Memorial. Face 7.

THORPE Frederick Horace
Mentioned in Despatches. Yeoman of Signals C/J110249, Royal Navy. HMS ‘Cleopatra’. Died 22nd March 1942, aged 33 years. Son of Arthur George and Mildred Mary Thorpe. Husband of Amelia Jane Thorpe of Hillhead, Glasgow, Scotland. Born Stow Bedon, Norfolk. Missing and commemorated Chatham Naval Memorial. 58.2.

Private 241196. 1st/5th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Died in Palestine 19th April 1917. Aged 24. Born Caston and enlisted Norwich, Norfolk. Born 1892 in Griston (registered as Henry), the son of James & Anna Maria Cator. Birth registered in the July to September Quarter 1892 in the Wayland Registration District. In the 1901 census he was a son, aged 8, son of James and Anna Cator, born Griston, resident Church Farm Cottage, Caston, near Attleborough, Norfolk. In the 1911 he was a son, aged 18, an agricultural labourer, son of James and Anna Cator, born Griston, resident Caston, near Attleborough, Norfolk. Formerly 5642, Norfolk Regiment. Missing and commemorated Jerusalem Memorial. Panel 12 to 15.
COOPER Herbert
Lance Corporal 13269. 108th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), formerly 7223 Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action 17th August 1917. Son of Maria Platford (formerly Cooper) and stepson of Charles Platford. Born Caston (as SDGW, Rockland on census), enlisted Norwich and resident Caston, Norfolk. Missing and commemorated Tyne Cot Memorial. Panel 154 to 159 and 163A.
CORLEY Frederick Charles
Second Lieutenant. Border Regiment, Battalion unspecified but attached 8th Battalion, Killed in action 12th April 1918. Born Caston, Norfolk. Missing and commemorated Ploegsteert Memorial. Panel 6.

Note: believed, not proven. Frederick Charles Corley birth recorded Wayland District 1887, census has born Caston. Brother George William Corley born Caston 1884, both believed illegitimate sons of Eliza Corley (born Caston c1859 the daughter of Charles and Mary A Corley) who marries Charles Benjamin Norman in 1888. Lance Corporal in 2nd Battalion, Norfolk Regiment in 1911. Medal Roll notes Private 7069 with 1st Battalion, Norfolk Regiment and later 10/23236 Acting Warrant Officer II Class with Border Regiment, later commissioned.

Born 11th October 1871 the son of Richard and Mary Elizabeth Hannant, birth recorded as Dick Hannant in Aylsham District. Marries Agnes Gertrude Rackham in 1900 as Dick Hannant and appears on census as Dick Hannant with exception of 1891 census when appears as Richard Hannant.

Enlists as Richard Hannant, Private TF/2509. 8th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment. Killed in action 25th April 1915. Husband of Agnes Gertrude Hannant of 11 Gordon Road, Southall, MDX. Brother of Edgar Hannant. Born Coltishall, Norfolk, enlists Hounslow and resident Southall, MDX. Missing and commemorated Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. Panel 49 and 51.

Private 12957. 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action 3rd May 1917, aged 21 years. Son of Robert and Louisa Tye, brother of Robert William Tye of 248 Ley Street, Ilford, ESS.
