INCORPORATING FORDHAM, RYSTON, ROXHAM AND BEXWELL - WAR MEMORIAL
World
War 1 & 2- Detailed Information
Compiled and Copyright © Peter Dearsley 2004
The
memorial is in the form of a stone cross situated opposite to the church,
at the junction of Ely Road, Downham Road, Sluice Road and Cow Lane.
The
memorial lists those who laid down their lives during WWI, with the
names of the WWII fallen added at a later date. There is no mention
of casualties from other conflicts (Malaya, Korea, etc). Names are recorded
with initials only. There are no details of rank (except officers),
branch of service, or dates of death.
There
are six panels around the base of the cross. The dedication panel reads:
To
the honoured memory of those who fell in the Great War 1914-1919, also
1939-1945.

Beneath
this dedication are the names of (it is believed) those dignitaries
present at the unveiling ceremony. The names of the fallen are listed
on four of the five remaining panels, the sixth being blank. The men
of Denver appear on two panels; one panel is dedicated to Fordham; one
panel lists the casualties from the nearby hamlets of Ryston, Roxham
and Bexwell.
[For
ease of reading and searching the names have been split by war and sorted
into alphabetical order within that category. The names of the village/hamlet
panel they appear on has been retained in the third column.]
