THE
RICHARDSON'S OF FAKENHAM
Information supplied by Dorothy E. Bottrill (nee Turner)
URBANE CARMAN RICHARDSON
Urbane Richardson was the youngest
son of Richard Richardson and Emily (nee Carman) and was born in
Fakenham, Norfolk in 1886. He lived at The Bell Hotel in Norwich
Road, Fakenham but his mother died from breast cancer when he was
a baby. She had him baptised before she died. Together with his
brothers and sisters he was fostered out with friends and relatives.
As a boy he went to the Boy's National School next door to The Bell
and then trained to be a butcher at Brandon, Suffok. However he
became a groom and was very clever with horses. He used to whisper
to them and they would do anything for him. He met his wife Olive
at Abbott, Dorset at the large house where they worked.
He went off to fight in the First
World War and was in the Royal Horse Artillery, (Reg. No.38387).
He served in France for four years and was in "K" Battery,
Royal Horse Artillery and they fought in the battles of Ypres, Arras
and the Somme. He was in a newsreel at the cinema and the caption
of the newsreel was called "Watering the Horses". (A soldier
came towards the camera leading a horse and when he drew near the
camera he looked up and it was Uncle Urbane). His sister Muriel
Ivy Turner (nee Richardson) was so excited at seeing this that the
manager of the Coronet cinema in Lowestoft, said she could see the
newsreel free any time that week. He had very little leave and had
not been wounded but was sent home for a rest on the hospital ship
Warilda", which was engaged on the Southampton, Le Havre run.
On August 3rd, 1918, she was returning from France with 700 wounded
when she was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine UC-49, with
a very heavy loss of life. The weather was thick but the white hull
and red crosses of the ship were fairly discernable. The submarine
had been sighted on the surface and the "Warilda" tried
to ram the enemy vessel but failed and was then struck by the torpedo.
The "Warilda" remained afloat for two hours and then sank,
taking with her 123 persons. The men could be heard singing hymns
as the ship sank but were trapped and nobody could reach them. The
ship went down in the Channel, seven miles south of Shoreham-on-Sea.
Urbane Richardson is remembered with honour at the Hollybrook Memorial
in Southampton. He is also remembered on the Fakenham War Memorial. |
