Hardly Street is situated near the southern border of Norfolk with Suffolk, at the confluence of the rivers Yare and Chet, and midway between Norwich and Lowestoft. The War memorial is to the left of the path to St. Margaret’s Church.

Private 300006. 1st/7th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Formerly 3699 Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action in France & Flanders on 28th August 1917. Aged 35. Lived Hardley. Enlisted Loddon, Norfolk. Son of William Brabben, of Thorpe, Haddiscoe, Norfolk; husband of Adelaide Brabben, of 4, Walmer Rd., Kirkley, Lowestoft, Suffolk. Commemorated: Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 23 to 28 and 163A.

Probably: Robert James Brinded. Private 241772. 1st/5th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. Formerly 3700 Norfolk Regiment. Died in France & Flanders on 27th May 1918. Born and enlisted Norwich. Commemorated: Soissons Memorial, Aisne, France.

CRISP

George

Corporal 241833. 1st/5th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. Formerly 3712 Norfolk Regiment. Died in France & Flanders on 26th October 1917. Aged 25. Enlisted Norwich. Son of James and Louisa Crisp; husband of Mary Ellen Crisp, of Glemsford, Suffolk. Commemorated: Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 19 to 23 and 162.

Private 20944. 11th Battalion Essex Regiment. Formerly 17770 Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action in France & Flanders on 28th September 1916. Born Loddon, Norfolk. Lived Hardley. Enlisted Norwich. Commemorated: Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Pier and Face 10 D.

Gunner 651620. 325th Brigade Royal Field Artillery. Died on 24th February 1917 in France & Flanders. Lived Loddon, Norfolk. Enlisted High Wycombe, Bucks. Buried: Wimereux Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Ref. II. E. 5A.

KNIGHTS

Henry Louis

Private 43872. 8th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. Died of wounds in France & Flanders on 16th April 1918. Aged 19. Born and lived Hardley. Enlisted Wroxham. Son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Knights, of 30, Hardley St., nr. Loddon, Norfolk. Buried: Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Ref. XXXI. C. 17A.

THORPE

Albert

Private 202602. 2nd/7th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment. Killed in action in France & Flanders on 9th September 1917. Born Hardley. Lived Loddon. Enlisted Norwich. Commemorated: Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 75 to 77.

Lance Corporal 4911925. 6th Battalion Green Howards (Yorkshire Regiment.) Died on 9th August 1944. Aged 39. Son of Edward Arthur and Jane Gunton, of Langley, Norfolk; husband of Joyce Marion Gunton, of Langley. Buried: Banneville-La-Campagne War Cemetery, Calvados, France. Ref. XV. A. 11.

SOANES

Bryant Royal

Civilian. Died at School Lane, Langley on 7th October 1943. Aged 34. Husband of B. E. Soanes, of 10 Council Houses, Langley. Commemorated in the Civilian Roll of Honour Section Rural District Of Loddon.
