B1159, from the direction of Caister on Sea, you will enter the village.
At the small island, opposite the Spar Shop turn left onto The Street.
The memorial can be found on the left inset in the church grounds
of St Mary the Virgin. The memorial records both WWI and WWII losses.

9275, 8th Battalion Norfolk Regiment who ‘Died’ on 03/07/1916
at the age of 23. Arthur was born in London and enlisted in Great
Yarmouth. He was the son of John and Alice Allen, of Hemsby. He
is now laid to rest in grave A. 63 in LA NEUVILLE BRITISH CEMETERY,
CORBIE in France.
Note:
It is known that Arthur died from wounds received on 01/07/16,
the first day of the Battle of the Somme, when the 8th Battalion
attacked Montauban along with the rest of the 18th (Eastern) Division. |

11486, 9th (Queen's Royal) Lancers who was ‘Killed in action’
on 22/03/1918. Frank was born and resided in Hemsby and enlisted
in Great Ormesby. He has no known grave and is commemorated on

at the age of 21. Walter was born in Hemsby and enlisted in Norwich.

Yarmouth. He is now laid to rest in grave II. B. 31A in LIJSSENTHOEK
MILITARY CEMETERY in Belgium. |

age of 24. Alfred was born in Hemsby and enlisted in Norwich.
He was the Grandson of Mrs. S. A. Edmonds, of Hemsby. He is now

Sub-Lieutenant,
Royal Navy who served on H.M.S. "Partridge." And who
was ‘Killed in Action on 12/12/1917 at the age of 17 and who was
Mentioned in Despatches. Robert was the son of Richard F. E. and
Madeline Lucy Ferrier of Hemsby Hall, Hemsby. He has no known
grave and is now commemorated on panel 24 of the PORTSMOUTH NAVAL
MEMORIAL.
Note:
H.M.S. Partridge was lost on 12/12/17 when she was sunk by 4 German
destroyers while escorting a convoy. |

‘Died’ on 16/07/1918 at the age of 26 having previously served
in the 6th Battalion Essex Regiment. Malcolm was born in Hemsby
and enlisted in Great Yarmouth. He was the son of Mrs. Elizabeth
Gibbs, of Hemsby. He is now laid to rest in grave A. C. 1079 in
MIDDLESBROUGH (LINTHORPE) CEMETERY. |

27/11/1914 at the age of 29. Albert was born in Hemsby, resided
in Dunstable and enlisted in London. He was the son of Albert
and Georgiana King, of Hemsby, Great Yarmouth; husband of Hilda
Evans (formerly King), of 4, New Estate, Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire.
He is now laid to rest in grave I. M. 41 in POPERINGHE OLD MILITARY
CEMETERY in Belgium. |

9377, 9th Battalion Norfolk Regiment who was ‘Killed in Action’
on 26/09/1915. Arthur was born in Hemsby and enlisted in Norwich.
He has no known grave and is now commemorated on Panel 30 and
31 of the LOOS MEMORIAL in France.
Note:
The 9th Battalion was part of the ill-fated 24th Division and
on the day that Arthur died they went over the top at the Battle
of Loos where the division lost 3,900 officers and men killed,
wounded or captured. |

31. Sidney resided in Hemsby and enlisted in Norwich. He was the

of Rosa Knights, of Hemsby. He is now laid to rest in grave A.
132 in KARASOULI MILITARY CEMETERY in Greece. |

9281, 7th Battalion Norfolk Regiment who was ‘Killed in Action
on 13/10/1915 at the age of 23. George was born in Hemsby and
enlisted in Great Yarmouth. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.
W. Loades, of White House, Hemsby. He has no known grave and is
now commemorated on Panel 30 and 31 on the LOOS MEMORIAL in France.

Note:
Between the 8th and 13th October, the 12th (Eastern) Division
took part in the closing stages of the Battle of Loos. The 7/Norfolks
attacked with the rest of the division in the final advance at
Loos known as the "Action of the Hohenzollern Redoubt"
succeeding in capturing Gun Trench and the south western face
of the Hulluch Quarries. However, the division lost 117 officers
and 3237 men killed or wounded. |

Myhill), of Wapping, Great Ormesby, Norfolk. He has no known grave
and is now commemorated on Panel 7 to 10 on the POZIERES MEMORIAL

and is now commemorated on Face F on the KIRKEE 1914-1918 MEMORIAL
in India. |

1st/4th Battalion Norfolk Regiment who was ‘Killed in Action’
on 19/04/1917 at the age of 27. Ralph was the son of William Augustus
Thurgar, of "Eastcroft," Hemsby, Great Yarmouth, and
the late Charlotte Elizabeth Thurgar. He is now laid to rest in
grave XXIII. E. 9 in GAZA WAR CEMETERY in Israel.
Captain THURGAR was awarded a posthumous Military Cross which
was listed in the London Gazette on 14/08/17. His citation reads:
‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Although
wounded, he continued to lead his company until wounded a second
time, after which he issued orders as he lay on the ground until
carried to the rear.’ |

action’ on 22/03/1918 at the age of 25. Norman was born and resided

grave and is now commemorated on Bay 7 on the ARRAS MEMORIAL in

England, of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. He is now laid to rest in
grave 37. C. 6 in the REICHSWALD FOREST WAR CEMETERY in Germany
Lieutenant ENGLAND was awarded the M.BE. which was listed in the
London Gazette on 27/02/45. His citation reads:
‘The KING has been graciously pleased to give orders for the
following appointments to the Most Excellent Order of the British
Empire, in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in
the field.’ |

Seaman, LT/JX 217735, Royal Naval serving on H.M. Trawler Lord
Selborne who was ‘Killed in Action’ on 31/03/1941 at the age of
29. Charles was the son of Charles and Thurza Gibbs and the husband
of Nellie Gibbs, of Pill, Somerset. He has no known grave and
is now commemorated on Panel 5, Column 1 of the LOWESTOFT NAVAL
MEMORIAL.
Note:
On 31/03/41 the Lord Selborne Trawler hit a mine in the Humber
and was sunk. |

Volunteer Reserve who was ‘Killed in Action’ on 12/09/1944 at
the age of 21. Douglas was the son of Sidney Arthur and Ellen
Leonora Ives, of Hemsby. He is now laid to rest in a collective
grave VI. C. 5-6 with the rest of his crew in MILAN WAR CEMETERY
in Italy.
Note:
On 14 March 1943, No 148 Squadron reformed at Gambut in the ‘Special
Duties’ role and equipped with Halifaxes and Liberators. It became
responsible for supplying Partisan groups throughout the Balkans
and as far away as Poland as well as undertaking normal bombing
missions when not otherwise occupied. |

was ‘Killed in Action’ on 23/10/1942 at the age of 17. He is now
laid to rest in POINTE NOIRE EUROPEAN CEMETERY in the Congo.

On 23/10/42 H.M.S Phoebe was damaged by the U-161 (Achilles). |

Fitter, FAA/FX. 75623, Royal Navy serving on H.M.S. Glorious who
was ‘Killed in Action’ on 08/06/1940 at the age of 20. Trevor
was the son of William James and Gladys Mary Smith, of Great Yarmouth.
He has no known grave and is now commemorated on Bay 1, Panel
5 on the LEE-ON-SOLENT MEMORIAL
Note:
On Saturday the eighth of June, 1940, the aircraft carrier HMS
Glorious and her escorting destroyers HMS Acasta and HMS Ardent
were intercepted in the Norwegian Sea by the German battlecruisers
Gneisenau and Scharnhorst. The three British ships were sunk by
gunfire in a little over two hours, with the loss of over 1500
officers and men of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, and Royal Air
Force. |

AND PAUL) CHURCHYARD.
