HINGHAM WAR MEMORIAL

The Hingham war memorial stands in the grounds of St Andrew's church and is in the form of a Celctic cross with a flat, tapered shaft on a plinth with a two-stepped base. The inscriptions are on the fron face of the cross and on the plinth. There are 40 names listed for World War 1 and 6 for World War 2 which have yet to be transcribed.

William James

Private 5634 William James Abel was born in Hingham. He enlisted in the 8th East Surrey Regiment in Norwich. He served at Home and died on 12th February 1915. He is buried at Aveley (St. Michael) Churchyard and is remembered on the Hingham War Memorial.

BATLEY

Parnell Francis (Frank)

(Served as BARKER) Sergeant 16293 Parnell Francis (Frank) Batley was born in Ashill c1896. He enlisted in the 7th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served under the name of Barker in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 27th March 1918 aged 22. He is remembered on the Pozieres Memorial Panel 23 and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of James William and Henrietta Batley, of Market Street, Hingham.

BAUGH

Arthur William

Private 763018 Arthur William Baugh was born in Stechford, Warwicks c1888. He enlisted in the 28th London Artist Rifles Regiment in London. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 30th October 1917 aged 29. He is buried at Poelcapelle British Cemetery Grave XVIII. D. 5 and is remembered on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Henry Aldington Baugh and Emily Baugh, of "Ivythorpe," 32, St. Mary's Crescent, Leamington Spa.

BRUMMEL

William

Driver 85692 William Brummel was born in c1884 and enlisted in the 152nd Field Company Royal Engineers. He served in France & Flanders and died on 18th November 1918 aged 34. He is buried at St. Andre Communal Cemetery Grave I. A. 41 and is remembered on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Samuel and Edith Brummel, of The Bungalow, Hingham.

BUNN

Frederick

Lance Sergeant B/2569 Frederick Bunn was born in Deopham c1894. He enlisted in the 2nd Rifle Brigade Regiment in Wymondham. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 23rd September 1917 aged 23. He is buried at Prowse Point Military Cemetery Grave III. C. 7 and is remembered on the Hingham and Wymondham War Memorials. He was the son of John Bunn, of Hingham; husband of Mrs M. A. Bunn, of Vicar Street, Wymondham. He was a resident of Wymondham and an employee at Gaymers Cider in Attleborough.

BUSH

Walter Donald

Captain Walter Donald Bush was born in c1887 and enlisted in the 4th Worcestershire Regiment. He served in the Dardanelles and was killed in action on 4th June 1915 aged 28. He received the Military Cross. He is remembered on the Helles Memorial Panel 104 to 113 and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Frederick and Lucy Bush.

COOK

Frederick Ernest

Sapper 63241 Frederick Ernest Cook was born in Hingham c1878. He enlisted in the Royal Engineers in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action near the Somme on 15th November 1916 aged 38. He received the Military Medal. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 8A and 8D and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Frederick and Agnes Cook, of Hingham and the husband of Ethel May Cook, of The Folly, Hingham, where he was a resident. He was educated at Wymondham Grammar School.

COOPER

Frederick Percy

Private 238157 Frederick Percy Cooper was born in Hingham c1892. He enlisted in the 13th Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment in Bury St Edmunds. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 14th October 1918 aged 26. He is buried at Ration Farm Military Cemetery, La Chapelle-D'armentieres Grave IV. C. 14 and is remembered on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Frederick and Flora Cooper, of Hingham and was a resident of Hingham.

DACK

Charles

Private 200150 Charles Dack was born in Deopham c1894. He enlisted in the 1st/4th Norfolk Regiment in Hingham. He served in Palestine and died on 19th April 1917 aged 23. He is remembered on the Jerusalem Memorial Panels 12 to 15 and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Mr. C. and Mrs. C. E. Dack, of Deopham.

FAWKES

James Sidney

Private 41898 James Sidney Fawkes was born in Hingham c1898. He originally enlisted as 178383 in the Royal Field Artillery in Norwich on 5th October 1916, then later transferred to the 17th West Yorkshire Prince of Wales' Own Regiment. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 3rd September 1917 aged 19. He is buried at Caudry British Cemetery Grave IV. C. 7 and is remembered on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Charles and Florence Georgina Fawkes, of Gas Lane, Hingham.

GOWING / GOWEN

Reginald G

Private 32605 Reginald G Gowing / Gowen was born in Hingham. He originally enlisted as 016502 in the Royal Army Ordinance Corps in Piccadilly Middlesex, then later transferred to the 1st South Staffordshire Regiment. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 11th January 1917. He is buried at Frankfurt Trench British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel Grave D. 9 and is remembered on the Hingham War Memorial. He was a resident of London.

HALLOCK

Harry James

Private G/22433 Harry James Hallock was born in Hingham c1886. He enlisted in the 8th East Kent (The Buffs) Regiment in Hitchen 14/03/1917. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 18th October 1917 aged 31. He is buried at Jeancourt Communal Cemetery Extension Grave II. A. 20 and is remembered on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Edward James and Minnie Kate Hallock, of Hardingham Road, Hingham and was a resident of Hingham.

HILLING

Harry Gordon

Private 28671 Harry Gordon Hilling was born in Hingham c1886. He enlisted in the 1st Essex Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 14th April 1917 aged 31. He is remembered on the Arras Memorial Bay 7 and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Robert and Sarah Hilling and the husband of Harriet Ellen Hilling, of Piggs Hill, Hingham where he was a resident.

KENNY

Frederick John William

Private 18198 Frederick John William Kenny was born in Hackford. He enlisted in the 9th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 15th September 1916. He is remembered on Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 1C and 1D and on the Hingham War Memorial.

LEBBELL

Harry

Driver 94972 Harry Lebbell was born in Southburgh c1874. He enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery and died on 16th December 1914 aged 40. He is buried at Greenwich Cemetery Screen Wall. 1 "C." B. 1609 and is remembered on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Mathew and Mary Lebbell and husband of Anna Maria Lebbell, of Deopham Road, Hingham.

LEE

Charles

Airman 3rd Class 85213 Charles Lee was born in Hingham c1881. He served in the Royal Flying Corps 56 Kite Balloon Section. He was drowned on 31st December 1917 aged 36 when transport HMS Osmanieh hit mine and sank off entrance to Alexandria harbour. He is buried at Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery Grave F.26 and is remembered on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the Younger son of Charles and Elizabeth Lee, of Hingham, husband of Charlotte Lee, of 19, Ainsworth Street, Cambridge, where he was a resident.

LITCHFIELD

Arthur Frederick

Corporal 9442 Arthur Frederick Litchfield was born in Westminster c1890. He enlisted in the 8th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 22nd October 1917 aged ~27. He is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial Panel 34 to 35 and 162A and on the Hingham War Memorial.

LONG

Thomas William

Acting Corporal 49226 Thomas William Long was born in Hingham. He enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps in Brandon. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action by the bursting of a shell on 9th January 1916. He is buried at Bethune Town Cemetery Grave IV. H. 13 and is remembered on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the husband of Evelyn G. Long, of The Fields, Hingham and the father of five children.

MIDDLETON

Arthur William

Private 24719 Arthur William Middleton was born in Reymerstone c1879. He enlisted in the 9th Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in Warley Suffolk in 1914. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 26th March 1918 aged 37. He is remembered on the Arras Memorial Bay 7 and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the husband of Lucy Blanche Middleton, of Old Crown Lane, Kelvedon Hatch, Brentwood, Essex and a resident of South Weald.

MIDDLETON

Bertie George

Able Seaman J/30315 Bertie George Middleton was born on 5th June 1898 and enlisted in the Royal Navy. He served on HMS Salvia and was drowned at sea when torpedoed on 20th June 1917 aged 19. He is remembered on the Chatham Naval Memorial Ref. 21 and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Mrs. Fanny Middleton.

NEWBY

George

Private 1843 George Newby was born in Hingham on 07/09/1892. He enlisted in the 1st/4th Norfolk Regiment in Hingham on 16th January 1913. He served in Egypt and died at Sea of pneumonia when being invalided home on 13th October 1915 aged 23. He is remembered on the Helles Memorial Panel 42 to 44 and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Newby of Hingham.

PALLANT

Herbert Jeremiah

Corporal 6799 Herbert Jeremiah Pallant was born in Old Buckenham c1888. He enlisted in the 7th Norfolk Regiment in Attleborough. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 12th October 1916 aged 29. He received the Distinguished Conduct Medal. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 1C and 1D and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the husband of Mrs. Lena Pallant, Dereham Road, Hingham.

PEARCE

John

Private 31617 John Pearce was born in Hingham c1880. He enlisted in the 13th Essex Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and died of wounds on 2nd August 1917 aged 37 having been taken prisoner of war. He is buried at Niederzwehren Cemetery Grave IX. C. 1 and is remembered on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the husband of Mrs. E. L. Pearce, of Topcroft Hall, Bungay, Suffolk and was a resident of Hingham.

PHILLIPS

William Francis

Private 40094 William Francis Phillips was born in c1897 and enlisted in the 1st Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and died on 9th October 1917 aged 20. He is buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery Grave XII. L. 13 and is remembered on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of William Francis and Elizabeth Phillips, of Deopham and a native of Hingham.

PORRETT

Harold Arnold

Private 41205 Harold Arnold Porrett was born in Hingham c1899. He originally enlisted as S/295365 in the Royal Army Service Corps in Manchester then later transferred to the 4th Bedfordshire Regiment. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 11th January 1918 aged ~19. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 2C and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was a resident of Fallowfield, Manchester.

PURDY

Alfred Charles

Rifleman A/205136 Alfred Charles Purdy was born in Hingham c1899. He enlisted in the 9th King's Royal Rifle Regiment in Attleborough. He served in France & Flanders and died of Wounds on 27th March 1918 aged 19. He is remembered on the Pozieres Memorial Panel 61 to 64 and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Purdy, of Hall Moor Road., Hingham and husband of Armie Eliza Purdy (nee Barnard) and a resident of Hingham.

RAE

Alexander Edgar

Lance Corporal 106499 Alexander Edgar Rae was born in Hingham c1884. He enlisted in the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles (Saskatchewan) Regiment in Brandon Canada on 22nd March 1915. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 15th September 1916 aged 32. He is remembered on the Vimy Memorial on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of James Edgar Rae, of Hingham, and the late Jane Ormiston Rae and a resident of Canada.

SADD

Alfred John

Sergeant 16128 Alfred John Sadd was born in c1892 and enlisted in the 12th Suffolk Regiment in Riddlesworth. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 24th November 1917 aged 25. He is remembered on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval Panel 4 and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of John Sadd, of Fairland Cottage, Hingham.

SENT

Robert William

Gunner 147798 Robert William Sent was born in Hardingham c1879. He enlisted in the Royal Garri son Artillery Regiment in Attleborough. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 18th September 1918 aged 39. He is buried at Hancourt British Cemetery Grave F.4 and is remembered on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the Husband of Lily E. Sent, of Hall Lane, Hingham.

SKIPPER

James

Lance Corporal 18548 James Skipper was born in c1894 and enlisted in the Army Cyclist Corps. He served in Palestine and died on 31st January 1919 aged 25. He is buried at Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery Grave C. 168 and is remembered on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Mary Skipper, of Gas Lane, Hingham, and the late Benjamin Skipper.

SKIPPER

John

Private 27360 John Skipper was born in Hingham c1898. He enlisted in the 9th Norfolk Regiment in Attleborough. He served in France & Flanders and died of wounds on 20th November 1917 aged 19. He is buried at Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt Grave I. F. 30 and is remembered on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Benjamin and Mary Skipper, of Gas-Lane, Hingham.

SOREL-CAMERON

Herbert Augustus

Lieutenant Herbert Augustus Sorel-Cameron enlisted in the Royal Naval Reserve Regiment, He served on HMS Stephen Furness and was drowned at Sea on 13th December 1917 aged 39. He is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial Ref.27 and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was married and left three children.

SPRAGG

Frederick (Frank)

Private 260138 Frederick (Frank) Spragg originally enlisted as 5425 in the Durham Light Infantry Norwich then later transferred to the 2nd Alexandra Prince of Wales' Own Yorkshire Regiment. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 26th July 1917. He is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial Panel 33 and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was a resident of Hingham.

THURSTON

Sidney Charles

Trooper 1594 Sidney Charles Thurston was born in Towcester. He enlisted in the Royal Horse Guards in Norwich on 12th August 1913. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 13th May 1915 aged 17. He is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial Panel 3.and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Robert Joseph Thurston, of 3 Melton Cottages, Melton Road, Wymondham and was a resident of Wymondham.

UPCHER

Sidney Wodehouse

Lieutenant Sidney Wodehouse Upcher was born on 13th November 1889 and was educated at the Aldenham School in Elstree, Hertfordshire before enlisting in the Royal Navy. He served on HMS Vanguard and was drowned at Sea on 9th July 1917 aged 27. He is remembered on the Chatham Naval Memorial Ref.20 and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of the Rev. Canon A. C. Wodehouse Upcher and Margaret Ada Barham Upcher, of Hingham Rectory.

WARD

Charles William

Private 20531 Charles William Ward was born in Southburgh c1883. He originally enlisted as 5378 in the Norfolk Regiment in Norwich, then later transferred to the 9th Essex Regiment. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 3rd July 1916 aged 33. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 10D and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Mrs. Mary Ann Ward, of Mutton Corner, Carbrooke, Watton, husband of Mabel S. Thurston, (formerly Ward), of Norwich Road, Hingham and was a resident of Hingham.

Frederick

Private 14930 Frederick Warmer was born in c1896 and enlisted in the 9th Norfolk Regiment in East Dereham. He served in France & Flanders and died on 26th September 1915 aged 19. He is remembered on the Loos Memorial Panel 30 and 31 and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Frederick William and Emily Warmer, of 48 Norwich Street, East Dereham.

WATT

George Gordon

Sergeant 3/6904 George Gordon Watt was born in Hingham c1879. He enlisted in the 1st Gordon Highlanders in London 8th September 1914, having been for some years in London Scottish, afterwards in Volunteer Reserve. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 14th December 1914 aged 35. He is buried at Kemmel Churchyard Special Memorial 9 and is remembered on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of Peter G. and Jenny Watt and the husband of Margaret Watt.

WELLS

Walter

Private 18207 Walter Wells was born in Scoulton c1877. He enlisted in the 7th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 12th October 1916 aged 39. He is buried at Grevillers British Cemetery Grave XVIII. E. 12 and is remembered on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the Husband of Jane Wells, of Deopham Corner, Hingham.

WHITEHAND

William Fred

Private 16655 William Fred Whitehand was born in Plymouth c1893. He enlisted in the 9th Devonshire Regiment in Plymouth. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 6th September 1916 aged 23. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 1C and on the Hingham War Memorial. He was the son of George and Martha Whitehand, of Gas Lane, Hingham.
