NORTON SUBCOURSE WAR MEMORIAL

Norton Subcourse is a small village a mile or so north east of Loddon. For more information and pictures of the church please see Simon’s Norfolk Church Website. The memorial stands in St Mary's churchyard and takes the form of a cross mounted on a tapering shaft atop a plinth with a three stepped base. The inscription and names are on the plinth.

Private G/13870. 1st Battalion The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Killed in action in France & Flanders on 24th June 1917. Aged 19. Born Heckingham, Norfolk. Lived Norton St. Cross (sic). Enlisted Norwich. Son of John and Ellen Lucy Barnes, of Norton Subcourse, Norwich. Commemorated: Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 15 to 19.
EDWARDS Hubert James
Lance Corporal 23908. 4th Battalion Grenadier Guards. Killed in action in France & Flanders on 12th October 1917. Aged 27. Born Morton, Norfolk. Enlisted Colchester, Essex. Son of Robert Frederick and Mary Anne Edwards, of Loddon; husband of Rhoda Edwards, of Norton Loddon, Norwich, Norfolk. Commemorated: Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 9.
FULCHER Edward Clifford
Private 8910. 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards. Killed in action in France & Flanders on 14th September 1914. Born and lived Norton Subcourse. Enlisted Bury. Commemorated: La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, Seine-et-Marne, France.
FULLER John Sayer
Private 20582. 1st Battalion Essex Regiment. Formerly 17819 Norfolk Regiment. Died at sea on 13th August 1915. Aged 34. Born Toft Monks, Norfolk. Lived Norton Subcourse. Enlisted Norwich. Son of the late John and Jane Fuller, of Thurlton, Norfolk; husband of Charlotte Elizabeth Fuller, of 3, Ravens Meer East, Beccles, Suffolk. Commemorated: Helles Memorial, Turkey. Panel 144 to 150 or 229 to 233.
GARWOOD James
Private 20859. 13th Battalion Essex Regiment. Formerly 17587 Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action in France & Flanders on 28th April 1917. Born and lived Norton Subcourse. Enlisted Norwich. Commemorated: Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 7.

Deckhand 8759/DA, H.M.S. "Pembroke", Royal Naval Reserve. Died 5th February 1919. Aged 29. Son of Arthur William Hammond, of Norton Subcourse, Norwich. Buried in south-west part of NORTON SUBCOURSE (ST. MARY) CHURCHYARD, Norfolk.

Gunner 145692, 391st Battery, 172nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action in Palestine 27th March 1918. Aged 24. Enlisted Norwich, resident Loddon. Son of Albert Porter Lamb and Margaret Emma Lamb, of Norton Subcourse, Norwich, Norfolk. Buried in RAMLEH WAR CEMETERY, Israel and Palestine (including Gaza). Section S. Grave 26.
