DROWNED AT SEA BY THE CAPSIZING OF THE PLEASURE BOAT The PRINCESS OF WALES
AUGUST 25TH 1895.
Q.A.P.D.

Extract from The Times, Saturday, 4 January 1896, page 6:

THE FATAL BOAT ACCIDENT AT HUNSTANTON.

—An official report has been issued giving the result of a Board of Trade inquiry into the accident which occurred at Hunstanton on Sunday, August 25, to the pleasure boat Princess of Wales, causing the death of four passengers and one of the crew. The inspectors arrived at the conclusion that the capsizing of the Princess of Wales was due to the fact that she was caught in a sudden squall of wind of exceptional severity before there was time to properly relieve her of her canvas by letting go the peak halyards, and thereby lowering the peak, and that no blame attaches to Riches her master.

On the anniversary of the capsizing this extract from Norwich Mercury - Saturday 29 August 1896, page 4:

THE YAWL DISASTER AT HUNSTANTON.

The anniversary of last year’s boating disaster, by which the yawl the Princess of Wales was wrecked, and five lives lost, has been marked by the unveiling of a brass memorial tablet in St. Edmund’s Church, Hunstanton. The tablet bears the following inscription:—“Jesu Mercy. In memory of Frederick Charles Bloomfield, George Woods, Robert Long, Amos George Herring, William Algin Curl, drowned at sea by the capsizing of the pleasure boat the Princess of Wales, August 25th, 1895.—Q.A.P. D.” Further, Skipper Riches has been presented with illuminated address, which has foot a painting of the unfortunate boat, a good likeness of Riches, and a view of the beach. The inscription is as follows:—“Presented to Arthur Riches, together with a purse of money, by many admiring friends in recognition of his courageous conduct the occasion of the capsizing of the pleasure yacht the Princess of Wales, of Hunstanton, on August 25th, 1895.”
