The memorial stands in the churchyard of St. Peter's Church, Strumpshaw, Norfolk. It takes the form of a stone plinth surmounted by a wheel cross on a taperings shaft with a cross of sacrifice on the fron face. The inscription and names for World War 1 are on the front face of the plinth with an appended stone below for World War 2. The names are listed in full with their age. Within the church are two Rolls of Honour listing the men who served from each conflict.

Aged 34. Second Lieutenant. 3rd Regiment, South African Infantry. Killed in action Delville Wood 18th July 1916. Eldest son of Rev Alfred John and Alice E Barton of ‘Wanstrow’, Roseberry Road, Felixstowe, SFK. Born 7th April 1882 Hoarwithy, HWR and went to South Africa 1901. No known grave. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 4C.

BARTON ALFRED RICHARD, 2nd Lieut., 3rd South African Infantry, eldest s. of the Rev. Alfred John Barton, of Wanstrow, Rosebery Road, Felixstowe, late Rector of Strumpshaw, co. Norfolk, by his wife, Alice Ethel, dau. of Rev. John Rushworth Pilling ; b. Hoarwithy, co. Hereford, 7 April, 1882 ; educ. Lowestoft ; Denstone, and elsewhere then took a course of agricultural training at Aspatria, Cumberland ; went to South Africa in 1901, and settled on his own farm at Zevenfontein, Transvaal ; joined the Southern Mounted Rifles in 1904, attaining the rank of Lieut. ; took part In the rebellion of 1914 ; enlisted as a Private in the South African Infantry in Aug. 1916 ; came to England in Sept. : served with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in Egypt from Dec. 1915, where he was in action against the Senussi; obtained a commission in his own regiment 25 March, 1910 ; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 21 ApriL 1916, and. was killed in action at Delville Wood on or about 18 July following. Buried south of Delville Wood. His Colonel wrote : Wood He was last seen fighting hand. to hand with the few left in his trench. He has fallen splendidly in a great cause, and we honour his memory amongst the many brave gallant gentlemen who were lost in that fight." ‘ Unm.

Aged 19. Second Lieutenant. 9th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Killed by shrapnel 12th February 1916. Third son of Revd Alfred John and Alice E Barton of ‘Wanstrow’, Roseberry Road, Felixstowe, SFK. Born 20th January 1897 Strumpshaw Rectory, Norfolk, enlisted 22nd September 1914 and entered France 8th October 1915. Buried in White House Cemetery. Plot I. Row C. Grave 3.

BARTON, HUGH FABIAN, 2nd Lieut., 9th (Service) Battn. The Norfolk Regiment., 3rd and yst. s. of the Rev. . Alfred John Barton, late Rector of Strumpshaw, co. Norfolk, now of Wanstrow, Rosebery Road, Felixstowe, co. Suffolk, by his wife, Alice Ethel, dau. of the late Rev. J. R. Pilling ; and brother to. 2nd Lieut. A. R. Barton (q.v.) ; b. Strumpshaw Rectory, co. Norfolk, 20 Jan. 1897 : educ. South Lodge, Lowestoft, and Felsted School, co. Essex ; on leaving school at Felsted, Sept. 1914, he joined the Public Schools Corps, and was gazetted. 2nd Lieiu. in the 9th Norfolks 22 Sept. 1914 ; went to France 8 Oct; 1915. . After four months' continuous fighting (with the exception of a week in hospital with trench feet, and six days’ leave), he was killed in action in the front-line trench, 12 Feb. 1916, by shrapnel fire in the Ypres salient, north-east of Ypres, during a heavy bonthardment. Buried in the Military Cemetery at St. Jean, east of Ypres. His Colonel wrote of him : “ "Your boy was always so cheery, knew no fear and was ready for any duty, however dangerous. He died a gallant death, doing his duty amongst the men of his company, who feel his loss very much.’ ‘ Another officer : " He was desperately keen and a splendid soldier, and. though so young, one could always depend on him". Died at sea 13th August 1915. Son of Henry and Sarah Jane Matilda Debbage. Born Ranworth, enlisted Norwich and resident Bramerton, Norfolk. In the 1911 census he was aged 18, born Cantley, Norfolk, a labourer on a farm, resident with his parents, Henry and Martha Debbage (note different to CWGC), Low Town, Strumpshaw, Norfolk. No known grave. Commemorated on Helles Memorial. Panel 144 to 150 or 229 to 233.

Suffered gunshot wound to right hand and arm, in Lakenham Military Hospital 10 August 1917 to 12 September 1917, then East Dereham Hospital 12 September 1917 to 7 November 1917. No mention of him being a prisoner of war in his service record.
