THORNAGE WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed Information

The Thornage Memorial are within the church of All Saints along with a Roll of Honour to the men who served in World War 1. The memorial takes the form of a marble tablet with an ornate stone surround formed by two columns and a crenulated top. A further tablet was added at the bottom of the memorial, attached to the bottom of the surround, which contains the World War 2. There are eight men listed for World War 1 and two for World War 2. There is also a framed, and glazed, roll of honour with a foliate border and a red latin cross at the top with the names of the fallen in a single column and those who served in two columns below.

COOPER Dennis [William]
Private 54350. 10th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, formerly 184507 Army Service Corps. Died of wounds 1st September 1918. Son of George and Sabina Cooper. Born c1884 Thornage, enlisted Cromer and resident Melton Constable, Norfolk. Buried Fienvillers British Cemetery. D.9.
FITT Robert
Private 18439. 1st Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. Died of wounds 14th October 1915. Son of Lacey and Diana Fitt of Ivy House, Thornage, Norfolk. Born c1890 Thornage and enlisted Norwich, Norfolk. Buried Noeux-Les-Mines Communal Cemetery. I.E.19.
KENDLE Charles [Percy]
Private 28172. 9th Battalion, Essex Regiment. Killed in action 18th September 1918, aged 21 years. Son of Charles and (the late) Christiana Kendle of Thornage, Norfolk. Born Thornage, enlisted Cromer and resident Thornage, Norfolk. Missing and commemorated Vis-En-Artois Memorial. Panel 7.
MASSINGHAM Horace [William]
Private 15394. 9th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action 26th September 1915, aged 20 years. Son of Christopher William and Eliza Emma Massingham of Field Farm, Binham, Norfolk. Born Thornage and enlisted Norwich, Norfolk. Missing and commemorated Loos Memorial. Panel 30 and 31.
SANDS Jack
Unable to identify Jack Sands. Possibly ‘nickname’ and should read Samuel John Sands (note birth recorded 1890 as John Samuel Sands, all records after have Samuel John Sands). Private 55140. 20th Battalion, Kings (Liverpool Regiment), formerly 7182 Norfolk Regiment. Killed in action 12th October 1916. Son of William C and Susannah Sands. Born Melton Constable, enlisted Norwich and resident Thornage, Norfolk. Missing and commemorated Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 1D, 8B and 8C.
SHERINGHAM Hugh Valentine
Captain. T Company, Camel Transport Corps, attached Army Service Corps. Died 16th October 1918. Son of Henry and Edith A Sheringham. Born c1887 Thornage, Norfolk. Buried Cairo War Memorial Cemetery. O.314.
