PRESTON CAPES WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The external war memorial can be found in the grounds of St. Peter & St. Paul's Church, Church Way, Preston Capes, Daventry. It takes the form of an octagonal three stepped base surmounted by a square sectioned stone plinth with tapering shaft & cross. Incised inscriptions on plinth. There are five names listed 4 for World War 1 and 1 for World War 2. The memorial was unveiled in October 1920 by Sir Charles V Knightley, Bart. There is a further memorial within the church of St. Peter & St. Paul's Church which takes the form of a all mounted marble tablet with gold coloured lettering and a flower in elief in each corner. This was also unveiled in October 1920 by Sir Charles V Knightley, Bart. This tablet also lists the men who served but does not list the man who died in World War 2.

Private 40600, "A" Company, 9th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Died of wounds 9 October 1918. Aged 26. Born Preston Capes, enlisted Towcester. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Coles, of Preston Capes, Rugby. Enlisted Dec., 1915. Previously wounded Sept., 1917. Buried in Bellicourt British Cemetery, Aisne, France. Plot V. Row O. Grave 9.
FINCH Charles Frederick
Private 18313, 7th Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. Killed in action 9 October 1916. Born Helmdon, Northants., enlisted Northampton. Husband of F. N. E. Finch, of Preston Capes, Byfield, Northants. Buried in Villers Station Cemetery, Villers-au-Bois, Pas de Calais. France. Plot IV. Row A. Grave 10.
PHIPPS Frederick John
Private 18665, 7th Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. Killed in action 27 September 1915. Enlisted Northampton. No known grave. Commemorated on The Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais. France. Panel 91 to 93.
QUINNEY Mark
Private 22762, 1st Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. Killed in action 23 July 1916. Aged 22. Born Maidford, Northants., enlisted Northampton. Son of Joseph and Fanny Quinney, of Preston Capes, Byfield, Northants. No known grave. Commemorated on The Thiepval Memorial Somme. France. Pier and Face 11 A and 11 D.
HEMSTED John
[Spelt HEMSTEAD on SDGW] Second Lieutenant, "D" Battery, 106th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action 16 April 1917. Aged 33. Son of the Rev. Alfred Hemsted and Mary Hemsted, of Preston Capes Rectory, Rugby. A Tea Planter in Ceylon. IN the 1891 census he was aged 6, son of Afred and Mary Hemsted, born Coatham, Yorkshire, resident haw Well, Princes Street, Corbridge, Hexham, Northumberland. In the 1901 census he was aged 15, schoolboy, ledger, bortn Coatham, Northumberland, resident Leatherhead School, Leathrhead, Epsom, Surrey. No known grave. Commemorated on The Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 1.

Daughter Margery Esther Capes born 30 September 1904 at Banbury. Hei9ght 5 feet 6 inches, weightn 134lbs, girth 56 inches. Assign Labour Corps 29 October 1917. Demobilised 9 October 1919 at Nottingham, to Army Reserve.
