CAPES WAR MEMORIAL

War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The
external war memorial can be found in the grounds of St. Peter &
St. Paul's Church, Church Way, Preston Capes, Daventry. It takes the
form of an octagonal three stepped base surmounted by a square sectioned
stone plinth with tapering shaft & cross. Incised inscriptions on
plinth. There are five names listed 4 for World War 1 and 1 for World
War 2. The memorial was unveiled in October 1920 by Sir Charles V Knightley,
Bart. There is a further memorial within the church of St. Peter &
St. Paul's Church which takes the form of a all mounted marble tablet
with gold coloured lettering and a flower in elief in each corner. This
was also unveiled in October 1920 by Sir Charles V Knightley, Bart.
This tablet also lists the men who served but does not list the man
who died in World War 2.

Son of the Rev. Alfred Hemsted and Mary Hemsted, of Preston Capes
Rectory, Rugby. A Tea Planter in Ceylon. IN the 1891 census he
was aged 6, son of Afred and Mary Hemsted, born Coatham, Yorkshire,
resident haw Well, Princes Street, Corbridge, Hexham, Northumberland.
In the 1901 census he was aged 15, schoolboy, ledger, bortn Coatham,
Northumberland, resident Leatherhead School, Leathrhead, Epsom,
Surrey. No known grave. Commemorated on The Arras Memorial, Pas
de Calais, France. Bay 1. |
