SPRATTON WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed information

The Spratton memorial is to be found within the grounds of St Andrew's Church, Spratton. It takes the form of a stone wheel cross with a tapering shaft mounted on a stone plinth that has metal plaques attached bearing the inscription; the whole is surrounded by railings in a paved area. There are 18 names for World War 1 and 6 for World War 2.

Royal Field Artillery. In the 1911 census he is aged 8, at school, born Spratton, son of George Albert and Lillian Martin, resident Spratton. If he was that age in the census then he would have been 16 in 1919.

RHODES-MOORHOUSE, V.C.

William Barnard

Lieutenant, 2nd Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. Died of wounds 27th April 1915. Aged 27. Son of Edward Moorhouse, of Parnham House, Dorset; husband of Linda Rhodes-Moorhouse. Awarded the Victoria Cross (V.C.). Buried west of the house in the grounds of Parnham House, PARNHAM PRIVATE CEMETERY, BEAMINSTER.

An extract from "The London Gazette," dated 22nd May, 1915, records the following:-

"For most conspicuous bravery on 26th April, 1915, in flying to Courtrai and dropping bombs on the railway line near that station. On starting the return journey he was mortally wounded, but succeeded in flying for 35 miles to his destination, at a very low altitude, and reported the successful accomplishment of his object. He has since died of his wounds."

Private 3/8964 [3/8064 on CWGC], 1st Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. Killed in action 2 November 1914. Aged 21. Born in Spratton 1893 although SDGW states St Luke's, Northampton, enlisted Northampton. Son of Elizabeth Smith, of Spratton, Northampton, and the late Reuben Smith. In the 1911 census he is listed as the son of Sarah Ann Smith (widow), aged 15, Errand Boy, born and resident Spratton. No known grave. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 43 and 45.
