World
War 1 & 2 Detailed Information
Compiled and copyright © Martin Edwards 2016
The
Chollerton memorial stands on a bend on the A6079 opposite St. Gile's
Parish Church in Cholerton. It akes the form of a stone cross of Anglian
type standing on a large square plinth, which in turn sits on a threestepped
base. The inscriptions are on panels on the pedestal which have been
carved in relief. The names from 1914-18 are on the sides of the pedestal,
the dedication and the names from 1939-45 are on the front. The whole
is set in a neatly kept gravel area. There are twenty-nine names listed
for World War 1, plus one civilian, and five for World War 2. The memorial
was designed by Messrs Knowles and Leeson of Newcastle and coionstructed
by Mr Charlton of Birtley (Builder); the site was the gift of Sir Hubert
Swinburn Bart. of Capheaton. It was unveiled on 21 August 1921 by Brigadier-General
Riddell C.M.G., D.S.O.

Extract
from Bond of Sacrifice: Officers Died in the Great War 1914-1916,
Volume I, page 390:
CAPTAIN
HUGH TAYLOR, 2nd BATTN. SCOTS GUARDS, was the elder son
of Mr. and Mrs. Taylor, of Chipchase Castle, Northumberland, and
was born on the 24th December, 1880.
He was educated at Harrow and at Balliol College, Oxford, where
he graduated with honours. He joined the Scots Guards in June,
1904, becoming Lieutenant in May, 1905, and Captain in November,
1914. Previous to the war he was Machine Gun Officer of his battalion,
and on going to the front he became Brigade Machine Gun Officer.
He led his company in an attack near Rouges Banes on the night
of the 18th-19th December, 1911, and succeeded in reaching and
occupying part of the German trenches. He returned alone to the
British trenches to report, and while going back to rejoin his
men was caught by machine-gun fire and killed instantaneously.
During the informal Christmas truce his body, which was lying
near the German trenches, was brought over to the British lines
by the Saxon soldiers with their heads bared, and was buried in
the little military graveyard at La Cardonière Farm.
He was mentioned in Field-Marshal Sir John French's Despatch of
the 14th January, 1915, for gallant and distinguished conduct.
It is interesting to note that on Christmas Day, when the Saxons
and British soldiers met during their " truce," each
side collected and brought the dead to the centre of the space
between their respective lines. Two trenches were dug, and the
British and Saxon soldiers were buried, the English Chaplain reading
the service, which was translated into German as he read. The
soldiers afterwards fraternised for some hours.
Captain Taylor married, in 1907, Mary, daughter of Henry Villiers
Stuart, of Dromana, and left a son and a daughter.
