Singapore Cenotaph War Memorial

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and Copyright © Chris Collier & Martin Edwards 2005

The Singapore Cenotaph is close to the entrance to the Singapore River in the park area before the old Singpaore Club. It commemorates both World War 1 and World War 2 but only contains the names of those who died during World War 1. The two World Wars are on opposite sides of the memorial and each year of the war is carved into an individual step of the memorial.

CAMPBELL
Colin W Burnley
The Straits Times, 10 August 1915, Page 6
The Late Lieutenant Colin W.Burnley Campbell
We extract the following from the Oban Times, (the Argyleshire county paper) of 10th ulto., viz :—"Gleudaruel. Obituary: — The deepest gloom was cast over the district when it became known that Lieut. Colin W. Burnley Campbell, of Ormidale, was killed in action in France. The sympathy of all classes of the community are with Colonel and Mrs. Burnley Campbell in their sore bereavement. Kind, affable, generous and courteous, the late Lieutenant was a great favourite with everyone with whom he came in contact. Of the 28 persons who joined the army from this parish since the war began, he has been the first to fall at the post of duty. He was an engineer, and, on the completion of his apprenticeship, he secured a good position in the firm of Sir John Jackson and Co., London. When the war broke out he was with this firm in Singapore, and immediately resigned his situation. Having obtained a commission in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, he went, in the highest spirits, to France with his regiment on May 26, and fell in action on June 27. It may be truly said of him that he gave his life for his country which he loved so well." With reference to the above we would mention that, in the person of Lieutenant Burnley Campbell, the Associated Scottish Pipers of Malaya have paid their first toll to the war.

LES MARIE LOUISES AU FRONT

A telegram received in Singapore reports that Mr. Harald de Bondy, the youngest son of Comte de Bondy, French consul here has left for the front, on the 29th of March. It is an interesting fact to note as, until now, the class 16 to which Mr. de Bondy belongs had been kept in reserve. Writing at the end of January last, the young soldier, trained in Nantes in the 91st Infantry, said “... The class 16 which has been almost one year in the depots, will not be long before leaving. At the beginning of spring I expect to be sent to the front to take part in the great offensive. I am more than ever impatient to go and do my duty, and you can depend that I shall do my bit to get rid of that "vermine" ......".— We hope, that at the front, the young Marie Louise will find an occasion to deserve his being classed as a first rate rifle-shot, and his being complimented several times by his chiefs : ” . . . The General of the XIth region," he wrote on the middle of February, "came and inspected us. We looked very smart in our uniform bleu horizond. Once the Review finished, we gave him an exhibition of shooting at 75 metres. I was chosen with two others. Out of 8 shots. I got seven in the bull's eye, and one just a little off it. I was congratulated: "My boy, the General said, I pity the one that finds himself in front of your rifle when you are at the front!”

Grave 4.

Extract from The Bond of Sacrifice Volume 1 September-December 1914:

2nd LIEUTENANT STANLEY BENSKIN HENSON, SPECIAL RESERVE, attd. 1st BATTN. PRINCE ALBERT'S (SOMERSET LIGHT INFANTRY), who was killed in action at the end of the year 1914, aged twenty-seven years, was the only son of Dr. and Mrs. Henson, of 2, Derby Street, Mayfair, and of Elmsett Hall, Wedmore.

He was educated at King's School, Bruton, and Pembroke College, Oxford, and obtained an appointment in the Colonial Police some six years before his death, being stationed in Singapore and Penang.

Soon after the declaration of war he resigned his appointment and returned to England. He had joined the Special Reserve of his Regiment as 2nd Lieutenant on probation in September, 1913, and in November, 1914, was attached to the 1st Battalion of his Regiment on going to the front.

The officer commanding the battalion gave the following details: “As to the manner of your son's death, I can only tell you that he died as a very brave man. He was leading his men in the attack on the German trenches, and had outstripped the rest of his company by about twenty yards, when he was shot through the heart and killed instantly. Those of his company who were fortunate enough to come out of the action alive speak in the highest terms of your son's courage. He is a great loss to the Regiment.'”

LANE
Hector Allan
Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. Killed in action 13th May 1915. Aged 25. Son of John Lane, of Cullisse, Parkstone, Dorset. No known grave. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 34.

Extract from The Bond of Sacrifice Volume 2 January-June 1915:

LIEUTENANT HECTOR ALAN LANE, 1st BATTN. EAST LANCASHIRE REGT., who was killed in action on the 13th May, 1915, near Ypres, was the only son of John Lane, of Cullisse, Park-stone, Dorset.

He was born on the 2nd June, 1889, at Decorah, Iowa, in the United States of America, and was educated at Newton College, Newton Abbott, where he obtained a scholarship from the Law Society, and eventually became a solicitor.

In March, 1907, he received a commission in the Dorsetshire R.G.A. Volunteers, with which he served until 1911, when he went out to Singapore to practise his profession. While there he joined the Singapore Volunteer Artillery, and at the outbreak of the war he, with two other officers, was put in charge of a fort. He wrote to England and offered his services to the War Office, which were accepted, and he was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the East Lancashire Regiment in September, 1914, as "a candidate from the self-governing Dominions and Crown Colonies," becoming Temporary Lieutenant in November and Lieutenant in December, 1914. He reached London in January, 1915, and was posted to the 1st Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment, with which he served until his death.

His Colonel wrote of him: “I am very grieved to inform you that your son was killed on the 13th instant. On the evening of that day he led his platoon against a farm occupied by the Germans; he got in all right with his men, and was exchanging shots with them in the farm buildings when he was shot in the head and died at once He was only with us a short time, but quite long enough to show what stuff he was made of. He was a valuable officer, and did his work very well, and I am very sorry to lose him. He made himself very popular with all ranks. He is buried at the farm he took, which is 1,200 yards north of Wieltje, a village north-east of Ypres.

ON THE ROLL OF HONOUR.
Lieutenant Hector A. Lane Killed In Action.

Mr. C. Everitt, of Messrs. Sisson and Delay, was in receipt of a brief cable yesterday conveying the regrettable intimation that Mr. Hector A. Lane had been killed in action, presumably in France. So another exceedingly capable young officer is lost to his country and many residents in Singapore lose an admirable and highly respected friend.
During his residence of three years in Singapore, Mr. Lane was a notable figure among the younger members of the bar and a volunteer officer whose abilities and enthusiasm had marked him out as a useful member of the local corps. The only son of Mr. John Lane, of Poole, Dorset, he was educated at Newton Abbot Grammar School and was trained to the law in the same offices in Poole as two of his Singapore confreres — Messrs. Mundell and Dickinson. He completed his student years creditably by taking third class honours in his final and was admitted a solicitor at the age of 21, five years ago. During the same period he held a commission in the Dorset R.G.A. (Territorials). In that sphere he applied himself to his work with the same conspicuous ardour and success as in law earned a first-class certificate for Efficiency and shared with Poole Company — of which he was gun captain—the honour of winning the King's Prize, the blue riband of big gun shooting in England. When he came out to the staff of Messrs. Sisson and Delay in 1911 lie naturally joined the S.V.A. as a gunner; but he was soon found to be too valuable to remain in the ranks and was promoted to a 2nd Lieutenancy with only the preliminary step of bombardier intervening. As an officer he more than justified his speedy commission and had the confidence of the whole company, while during the early days of the war he shared the work in the local forts. He left here in November to offer himself for service at the front. When he left it was understood that he was assured a commission with his favourite arm, but on arriving at home he found that Major-General Reade's recommendation, by some inadvertence, had missed its way to the War Office, and, rather than wait indefinitely for entrance to the artillery, he accepted a commission in a Liverpool Battalion of a Lancashire line regiment. In his last-received letter to friends in Singapore he said be was still in training but hoped to be at the front before long. His heroic death must have overtaken him shortly after arriving in France—a victim to the terrible conditions under which, it has been estimated, an officer's period of immunity averages only eleven days.

Extract from The Bond of Sacrifice Volume 2 January-June 1915:

LIEUTENANT CHARLES MERVYN PAYTON, 3rd (RESERVE) attd. 1st BATTN. THE QUEEN'S OWN (ROYAL WEST KENT REGIMENT), was the only son of Sir Charles A. Payton, M.V.O., late H.M. Consul-General at Calais, of Stepney Court, Scarborough. He was born on the 5th December, 1891, at the British Consulate, Mogador, Morocco, and was educated at Dover College, Dover. Mr. Payton received a commission, as 2nd Lieutenant, in the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, in 1910, becoming Lieutenant in September, 1911. At, the outbreak of the war with the Central Empires he was employed at the Colonial Secretary's Office at Singapore. He immediately left for home to rejoin his battalion, and for active service was attached to the 1st Battalion of his Regiment. Lieutenant Payton served with it in France, where, on the 18th April, 1915, he was leading his men in the attack on Hill 60, and, having picked up a fallen soldier's rifle, was firing at the enemy when he was killed. He was buried on the battlefield. For his gallant conduct in the war he was mentioned in Sir John French's Despatch of the 31st May, 1915.

He was a keen sportsman, a remarkably good shot, and an expert angler.

Death of Lieut. C. M. Payton.
We regret to have to say that the mail has brought news of the death of Lieut. C. M. Payton, 1st battalion Royal West Kents, thus confirming a fear that the officer of that name mentioned in a recent casualty list who had unit his death in action was the Government official who had lived here for some little time. Lieut. Payton, who was recently acting Chief Clerk in the Secretariat, Singapore, went home to join his regiment at the outbreak of war and was killed presumably during the fighting at Hill 60. He was a son of Sir Charles Payton, M.V.O., formerly Consul-General at Calais.

The Late Lieut. Thornton.
From letters received by the mail, we (Pinang Gazette) learn that the late Lieut. Thornton, son of Mr. Justice Leslie Thornton, met his death in a cavalry charge, by about 70, against an enemy force (Tangistanis) of about seven times that strength. The affair happened on the morning of September 9, in resisting a serious attack on the outpost line near Bushire. The infantry first had a tough fight, but eventually forced the enemy out of the ravines on to the open plain, where the cavalry squadron was waiting for them. The result was a most gallant performance. Mr. Thornton's commanding officer states that deceased had just before been specially mentioned for a gallant action in the previous month, when he brought, in at considerable personal risk, a sowar whose horse had been killed. The King and Queen telegraphed their condolences to Mr. Justice Thornton, as did the Commander-in-Chief from Simla "on the Ioss of your gallant son."
