The
Witney War Memorial is to be found in the High Street, Witney. It takes
the form of qa three-stepped plinth mounted on which is an octagonal
pedestal stopped with a tapered shaft and market-style cross. The memorial
is set within a small garden delimited by stone posts and chain link
fence. There are 147 names listed for World War 1 and 32 for World War
2. The memorial cost £870 1s 3d, the designer was Mr Thomas Rayson
and the builders Messrs. Axtell & Son; the memorial was unveiled
12 September 1920. The original plans for a Memorial Hospital to accompany
the memorial were abandoned in 1919 due to a lack of funds. The funds
raised were distributed between the Radcliffe Infirmary, Witney Nursing
Association and Leys Recreation Ground.
