KINCLAVEN WAR MEMORIAL

The Kinclaven war memorial is to be found in Kinclaven Parish Church, Kinclaven, Tayside, Scotland and takes the form of a lych gate at the entrance to the churchyard. The lych gate has decorative wrought iron gates with dedicatory tablets placed on the left and right hand walls of the gate naimg those who fell and an inscription above the gate itself. There are 14 names listed for World War 1 only. The gate was deducated by local clergy and unveiled by the Duke of Atholl 1 August 1920; the architect was Mr Reginald Fairlie. Details of the memorial appeared in the Blairgowrie Advertiser 7 August 1920.

Equerry-in-Ordinary to King George V when Prince of Wales, 1909-10 and Equerry to His Majesty, 1910-1914. Sometime A.D.C. to Field Marshal Earl Roberts. Son of Henry Charles Keith Petty-Fitzmaurice, 5th Marquess of Lansdowne and of Maud Evelyn, Marchioness of Lansdowne, of Bowood, Calne, Wilts; husband of Lady Violet Mary Astor (formerly Mercer-Nairne). Extract from THE BOND OF SACRIFICE - VOLUME 1:

MAJOR LORD CHARLES GEORGE FRANCIS MERCER - NAIRNE, M.V.O., 1st (ROYAL) DRAGOONS (EQUERRY TO THE KING), killed in action in Flanders on the 30th October, 1914, was the second son of the fifth Marquess of Lansdowne and the Marchioness of Lansdowne, daughter of the Duke of Abercorn, K.G. Lord Charles derived his surname of Mercer-Nairne, which he assumed in January, 1914, in lieu of his patronymic of Fitzmaurice, from his maternal grandmother, Emily Jane Mercer, Baroness Nairne.

He was born on the 12th February, 1874, and joined the 1st Dragoons from the Militia in May, 1895, becoming Lieutenant in February, 1898, and Captain in 1901. He acted as A.D.C. to the General Officer Commanding the Forces in Ireland from May to October, 1899, and then took part in the South African War, being present at the relief of Ladysmith, including the action at Colenso, at operations on the Tugela Heights, in the Orange Free State and in Natal, and at actions at Spion Kop, Vaal Krans, and Pieter's Hill. He received the Queen's medal with four clasps. In October, 1898, he had qualified as an Interpreter in French. From January, 1901, to February, 1904, he was A.D.C. to the Commander-in-Chief ; and from April, 1909, to May, 1910, he was Equerry to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales. In June, 1910, he was appointed Equerry to His Majesty the King, and was promoted Major in June of the latter year.

Lord Charles married, in January, 1909, Lady Violet Mary Elliot - Murray - Kynynmound, youngest daughter of the fourth Earl of Minto, and left two children : Mary Margaret Elizabeth (for whom Queen Mary was sponsor), born in February, 1910 ; and George Charles Mercer (for whom King George V was sponsor), born in November, 1912.

LIEUTENANT CHARLES JOHN MURRAY, 4th (RESERVE) BATTN . COLDSTREAM GUARDS, born on the 1st December, 1881, at Taymount, Stanley, Perthshire, was the son of Charles Archibald Murray, of Taymount, and a relative of the Earl of Mansfield and of Sir Robert D. Moncrieffe.

He was educated at Haileybury, and joined the 3rd (Militia) Battalion of the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) in 1899, being transferred to the Coldstream Guards in 1901, and serving with them till 1912. He took part in the South African War, for which he received the King's medal. He was A.D.C. to Sir Percy Girouard, Governor of Northern Nigeria, from 1907-09, and was again with him when Governor of British East Africa from 1909-11. In 1912 he settled as a breeder of horses at Invershura Njoro, British East Africa.

On the outbreak of the war with Germany he rejoined the Coldstream Guards, and was serving with them when he was killed on the 20th October, 1914, near Ypres, when leading an attack on Poezelhoek.

Lieutenant Murray was a member of the Guards', Bachelors', and Caledonian Clubs.
