to Royal Engineers, served South Africa war 1900 to 1902.
Retired as SqnSM, Mounted Branch RE, 1910. CSM, signal coy
RE, appointed Lt, 203rd FC March 1915. Served France in 203rd
FC, RE, 41st Div. Promoted Major and gazetted 28 Jan 1917
to 4th Royal Welsh Fusilieers in France; ran Regimental riding
school at Bouvelinghem, commanded 4th RWF from Feb to Jul
1917. T/Lt Col, awarded DSO (LG 1-1-18) whilst attached 24th
Bn London Rgt for conspicuous organizing ability in connection
with Messines Ridge attack. Awarded brevet as Lt Col. Recommended
twice for CMG during retreat of 1918, when he kept back large
numbers of enemy with just a handful of men. A/Lt Col 25 Sep
1918 to 16 Dec 1919, commanding 4th RWF to end of hostilities
and brought them back to Wrexham May 1919. Mentioned in Despatches:
LG 18/12/17 and 27/12/18. Native of Gillingham. |

carried out his work. He set an example of great energy and
devotion to all under him. |

conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in keeping his
working parties together under heavy shell-fire. Although
severely wounded, he continued at duty and his gallantry and
courage inspired all working under him. |

Michael Godfrey TATE -
Joined November 1917. For 1-6-1918, 35th Division attack on
Aveluy Wood, Somme. LG 24-9-18: For conspicuous gallantry
and devotion to duty. He led his section forward with great
dash and determination to the final objective, where he assited
in the work of consolidation and inspired those round him
with his spirit and fine example. He and his men killed a
considerable number of the enemy and captured a number of
prisoners. |
