The Ashwell memorial is to be found at St Mary's Church, Cottesmore Road, Ashwell. It takes the form of a pedestal set into the wall of the churchyard upon which is set a cross with a sword carved in relief. There are eleven name slisted for World War 1 only. The names here have been sorted into alphabetical order for ease of research and reading

Private 25091, 138th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Killed in action 1st July 1917. Aged 21. Born Leicester, enlisted Oakham. Son of Harry and Anna Adcock. Formerly 1586, 1st/5th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. No known grave. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 10.

BEAVER
Charles Ernest

Private 15343, 9th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. Killed in action 14th July 1916. Aged 21. Born and resident Ashwell, enlisted Oakham. Son of Mrs. John Beaver, of Ashwell, Oakham, Rutland. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 2 C and 3 A.

BENDALL
Charles Feecham

[Listed as Corporal, 5th Battalion on Mmeorial] Private 203388, 10th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died of wounds 30th April 1917. Aged 25. Born Blandford, Norfolk, enlisted Oakham, resident Great Casterton, Lincolnshire. Son of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Bendall, of Great Casterton, Stamford. Native of Oakham, Rutlandshire. Buried in DUISANS BRITISH CEMETERY, ETRUN, Pas de Calais, France. Plot II. Row O. Grave 13.

Acting Sergeant 546318, 509th (LOndon) Field Company, Royal Engineers. Died of wounds 25th November 1917. Born Ashwell, enlisted Oakham. Formerly 1269, 5th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. Buried in FINS NEW BRITISH CEMETERY, SOREL-LE-GRAND, Somme, France. Plot II. Row C. Grave 6.

CARPENDALE

Lance Corporal 15342, 1st/5th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. Died of wounds 29th June 1918. Aged 22. Born and resident Whissendine, enlisted Oakham. Son of Walter and Sarah Elizabeth Carpendale, of Whissendine, Rutland. Buried in TERLINCTHUN BRITISH CEMETERY, WIMILLE, Pas de Calais, France. Plot I. Row C. Grave 25.

JACOBSON, MC
Lionel Hugh

[Spelt Lyonel on CWGC & SDGW] Lieutenant, "D" Battery, 50th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action 29th April 1917. Awarded the Military Cross (M.C.). Buried in STE. CATHERINE BRITISH CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot/Row/Section K. Grave 8.

Corporal 40650, 17th Battalion, Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). Killed in action 20th October 1917. Born Northserny, Gloucestershire, enlisted Oakham, resident York. Formerly 15520, 5th Reserve Cavalry Regiment. Awarded the Distinguished Conduct medal (D.C.M.). No known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Private (Trooper) 1106, Royal Buckinghamshire Hussars. Died in Egypt 15th August 1915. Aged 24. Enlisted Churn, resident New Forest. Son of George Pratley, of Shakespeare Cottage, Sandgate, Kent. [Listed as 10th Battalion on memorial] Private 23329, 2nd Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. Died of wounds in Mesopotamia (Iraq) 11th March 1917. Aged 23. Born Bexley, Kent (Denley, Kent on CWGC), enlisted Oakham. Son of George Arthur and Mary Evelyn Johnson Townsend, of "Woodside," Horris Hill, Newtown, Newbury, Berks. Buried in AMARA WAR CEMETERY, Iraq. Plot XIII. Row E. Grave 2.
