OLLABERRY WAR MEMORIAL

The Ollaberry war memorial is to be found inside Ollaberry Cemetery, Shetland. It takes the form of a cross mounted on a tall shaft which stands on a plinth with a single step mounted on a pile of rocks. There are sixteen names for World War 1 and eight names for World War 2 plus one other military burial in the cemetery.

Husband of Hannah Duncan (nee Byrne) of 3 Whitehedge Road, Grassendale, Liverpool, Lancs. Born Shetland Islands. No known grave. Commemorated on Tower Hill Memorial.

(Fiblister) Possibly Sergeant 6/58. 1st Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Died 18th February 1917. No known grave. Commemorated on Cite Bonjean (New Zealand) Memorial.

(Swinister) Private 202266. 4th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders, formerly 26926 Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). Died home 28th May 1917, aged 27 years. Son of (the late) Robert and Elizabeth Jamieson. Enlisted Fort George, Scotland. Buried in Ollaberry Churchyard.

(Hillhead) Private 202717. 4th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders. Killed in action 20th July 1918, aged 35 years. Son of (the late) James and Barbara Jamieson Johnson. Husband of Mary E Johnson of 46 Braewick Road, Lerwick, Shetland Islands. Born Aceness (?), Shetland Islands and enlisted Fort George, Scotland. Buried in Marfaux British Cemetery. IV.A.10.

Son of Robert Peterson of Burnside, Voe, Delting, Shetland Islands. Husband of Charlotte Peterson of Haggister, Sullom, Shetland Islands. No known grave. (Lubba) No trace SDGW. Private 4199. Gordon Highlanders (Battalion unspecified). Died 4th January 1917, aged 24 years. Son of the late Robert Williamson of Lubba, Shetland Islands. Buried in Ollaberry Churchyard.

(Kingland) MM on memorial but no Matthew Williamson found with MM. Possibly Corporal 14898. 1st Battalion, Wellington Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Died 4th November 1918, aged 38 years. Parents given as Peter and Agnes Williamson; brother of Peter Williamson (see below) although parents address given as Steele Road, Kaiti, New Zealand). Commemorated Le Quesnay Communal Cemetery Extension. I.A.28.
