SS 
                    AURANIA was a Cunard Steam Ship Company ship built at Clyde 
                    by J & G Thomson and launched 26th December 1882, 7,269 
                    gross tons, 470 feet by 57 feet, steam compound engines, single 
                    screw, two funnels, three mastst, 16 knots. She could carry 
                    480 cabin passengers, 700 third class passengers and had a 
                    crew of 275. She worked the Liverpool to New York route; maiden 
                    voyage from Liverpool to new York, via Queenstown on 23rd 
                    June 1883. She was the consort of SERVIA of 1881 but was njot 
                    a "long ship"; ration of beam to length 8 to 1 compared 
                    with Servia's 10 to 1. She was the first Atlantic liner with 
                    private suites, her maiden voyage being completed under sail 
                    and two due to and engine breakdown. During the period 1899-1903 
                    it was requisitioned by the government to serve as a Boer 
                    War transport. During the period 1899-1903 it was requisitioned 
                    by the government to serve as a Boer War transport and during 
                    this period carried over 30,000 officers and men in addition 
                    to repatriating troops to India and Australia and carrying 
                    Boer prisoners. In 1903 she made her first Cunard sailing 
                    from Trieste to New York; in February 1905 the Aurania was 
                    sold to scrappers in Genoa for approximately £15,000.
