SS AMSTERDAM

SS Amsterdam was an London & North-Eastern Railways ship, built in the late 1930's. She was requisitioned for war service at the beginning of the war and converted to a hospital ship becoming HMHS Amsterdam. She was sunk off Juno Beach whe he hit a German mine on 7th August 1944 whilst evacuating wounded. The casulaty list show that fifty-five wounded men were lost as were ten medical staff and thirty crew members. Also lost were eleven German prsoners of war. Total losses, 106 persons.
