WELSH FRANKTON WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is lis in the form of sa shrine built into wall in the grounds of St Andrew's Church, Welsh Frankton. It takes the form of a dark marble tablet set into stone within the shrine that has a pitched roof. The memorial is topped with a cross and the lettering is in gold. There are ten names listed for World War 1. The names have been sorted into alphabetical order here for ease of reading and research.

[Listed as Royal Welch Fusiliers on the memorial] Private 285285, 9th Battalion, Welsh Regiment. Died of wounds 23 September 1917. Aged 19. Born and resident Whittington, enlisted Ellesmere. Son of Robert Brayne, of Lower Berg Hill, Whittington, Salop. Formerly 238849, Hereford Regiment. In the 1911 census he is a boarder with Charles Henry and Elizabeth Wilson, aged 13, born Frankton, Salop, resident Lower Frankton, Oswestry. Buried in WESTOUTER CHURCHYARD AND EXTENSION, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot II. Row C. Grave 13.

COLES

Edward Nelson

Private PLY/12418, H.M.S. Goliath, Royal Marine Light Infantry. Killed in action, vessel torpedoed by Turkish Destroyer in the Dardanelles, 13 May 1915. Aged 30. Born in Ellesmere, Shropshire, 19 February 1885 Son of Edward and Mary Elizabeth Coles, of Hardwick Cottage, Ellesmere; Salop; husband of Mabel May Coles, of 40, Destbridge Cottages, Tavistock, Devon. In the 1901 census he was the son of Edward and mAria Elizabeth Coles, aged 16, a Gunsmith's Apprentice, born Cisney, Flintshire, resident Hardwick Hall, Ellesmere Rural. No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon. Panel 7.

Samuel James

[Listed as DOWNES on the memorial] Lance Corporal 19521, 6th Battalion, King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. Killed in action in France and Flanders 22nd March 1918. Aged 21. Born Welshampton. Son of Stephen and Miriam Downs, resident at Welsh Frankton, Miriam later moved after her husbands death to 4, Park Green, Oswestry, enlisted Oswestry. Employed as a Platelayer. In the 1911 census he is listed as the son of Stephen and Miriam Downs, aged 14, a Domestic Assisting in Gradens, born Weolshampton, Shropshire, resident Lower Perthy Ellesmere. No known grave. Driver 620383, 223rd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Died of wounds 22 August 1918. Aged 25. Born Weston Rhyn, Salop, enlisted Shrewsbury. Born October to December Quarter 1893 in Oswestry Registration District, Shropshire. Son of John Allen Edwards and Emma Edwards, of "Yew Tree House," Lower Frankton, Oswestry, Salop. Buried in BAGNEUX BRITISH CEMETERY, GEZAINCOURT, Somme, France. Plot IV. Row F. Grave 18.

[Memorial states Canadian Cameron Highlanders] Private 153557, 43rd Battalion, Canadian Infantry. Killed in action 24 April 1916. Aged 23. Born 5 December 1892 in Ruyton II Town, Shropshire. Son of William and Annie Edwards, of 13, Perthy, Ellesmere, Salop. Farmer by trade. Unmarried. Next of kin William Edwards, of Frankton, Ellesmere, Shropshire. Enlisted and passed fit 26 July 1915 at Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, aged 22 years 7 months, height 5 feet 5 inches, girth 34 inches, complexion fair, eyes brown, hair brown; religion Church of England. No known grave. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 24 - 26 - 28 - 30. [Listed on memorial as Shropshire Yeomanry; as Walter LANGFORD on SDGW & CWGC] Private 230157, 10th (Shropshire and Cheshire Yeomanry) Battalion, King's (Shropshire Light Infantry). Killed in action 22 August 1918. Born Netherseal, Leicester, enlisted Ellesmere, resident Bettisfield, Salop. Formerly 1719, Shropshire Yeomanry. In the 1911 census he was a Servant, aged 21, a Domestic Groom, born Grangewood, Lester (sic - Leicestershire), resident at the Stables, Hardwick Hall, Ellesmere. Birth registered in the July to September Quarter 1889 in the Ashby de la Zouch Registration District, Leicestershire. No known grave. Commemorated on LOOS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 98 and 99.

Private, King's Own Shropshire Light Infantry possibly Herbert Arthur ROBERTS, Private 14280, 7th Battalion, King's (Shropshire Light Infantry). Killed in action 14 July 1916, Born Leighton, Salop, enlisted Ironbridge, resident Sheinton near Cressage. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 12 A and 12 D.

Private 38362, 5th Battalion, King's Own (Yorkshire Light Infantry). Died of wounds 19 September 1918. Born Jump, Yorkshire, enlisted Dumfries. Formerly 23217, King's Own Scottish Borderers. In the 1911 census he was aged 30, a Domestic Butler, unmarried, born Jump, Yorkshire, working for Walter Kynsaton at Hardwick Hall, Ellesmere, Shropshire. Buried in GREVILLERS BRITISH CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot XIII. Row D. Grave 11.

Frederick Thomas

Private 238850, 6th Battalion Herefordshire Regiment attached 6th Battalion, King's (Shropshire Light Infantry). Killed in action 20 September 1917. Aged 19. Born and enlisted Ellesmerre, Shropshire. Son of Thomas Price Urion and Sarah Urion, of Hordley Grange, Ellesmere, Salop. In the 1911 census he is listed as the grandson of Thomas Hopey (a widower), aged 13, at school, born Frankton, Salop, resident Brow Farm, Ellesmere, brother of George (below). No known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 154.

Serjeant 11693, 5th Battalion, King's (Shropshire Light Infantry). Died 14 November 1918. Aged 26. Son of Thomas P. and Sarah Urion, of Hordley Grange, Ellesmere, Salop. Awarded the Military Medal (M.M.). In the 1911 census he is listed as the grandson of Thomas Hopey (a widower), aged 18, workman on farm, born Frankton, Salop, resident Brow Farm, Ellesmere, brother of Frederick (above). Buried 100 feet North of the Vestry in ST ANDREW CHURCHYARD, WELSH FRANKTON, Shropshire.
