PRISTON WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is to be fond within the Church of St Luke and St Andrew in Priston (a Grade I listed building). It takes the form of an imitation parchment scroll made in marble that is affixed to the church internal wall.

Sacred to the Memory of

BUTLER John Ormonde
Second Lieutenant, (SDGW states Royal Flying Corps) 3rd Squadron, Royal Air Froce and General List. Died as a Prisoner of War 11 April 1918. Birth registered in the Macclesfield Registration District, Cheshire Oct-Dec Quarter 1898, volume 8A, page 148. In the 1901 census he was aged 2, born Eaton, Cheshire, son of R M P and Annie L Butler, resident Eaton Vicarage, Eaton Bank, Eaton by Congleton, Macclesfield, Cheshire. In the 1911 census he was a school pupil, aged 12, born Eaton Rectory, Engleton, resident Heatherdown, Ascot Heath. Buried in MONS (BERGEN) COMMUNAL CEMETERY, Hainaut, Belgium. Plot VIII. Row D. Grave 6.

Extract from British Army, De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour 1914-1918 – Volume 5 – page 26-27:

BUTLER, JOHN ORMONDE, 2nd Lieut., Royal Air Force, only s. of the Rev. Robert Moore Peile Butler, of Priston Rectory, Bath. M.A., by his wife, Annie Lansdale; b. Eaton, co. Chester, 11 Dec. 1898: educ. Harrow, and Trinity College, Cambridge; gazetted 2nd Lieut. Royal Air Force in July, 1917 served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from Jan. 1918; was wounded while flying over the German lines 24 March following, being taken prisoner, and died at the Prisoners of War Hospital, Mons, on the 11th of the following month. Buried in the Mons Cemetery; Unm.

COLBORNE Leslie
Gunner 16338, "B" Battery, 78th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action 24 October 1917. Aged 23. Born Preston (sic - Priston), Bath, enlisted Bath. son of George and Charlotte (nee Hawkins) Colborne of Priston. No known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 4 to 6 and 162.
OKE Robert

Captain, Royal Berkshire Regiment, 3rd/2nd Bn. He was the 31 year old son of Alfred William and Katherine Coldcall (nee Unwin) Oke. Robert was born at Upper Norwood, London. In 1891 the family lived at Southampton where Robert’s father was a solicitor. When the 1901 census was taken Robert was attending Cambridge University. In 1911 he was a Medical Student living at 32 Denmark Villas, Hove with his parents and two sisters. In 1912 he married Marjorie de la Sprye in Keynsham. He was killed 25 September 1915 and having no known grave is commemorated on Ploegsteert Memorial, Panel 7 and 8. Robert’s name also appears on the family tomb in Southampton. The inscription reads:

WILTON Albert
Private 24964, 11th Battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment). Died of wounds 9 February 1917. Aged 31. Born Bath, enlisted Taunton, resident Chippenham, Wiltshire. Son of John and Emma Wilton, of Bath; husband of Lillie Jones (formerly Wilton), of West Littleton, Marshfield, Chippenham, Wilts. Buried in ST. SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, ROUEN, Seine-Maritime, France. Section O. Plot V. Row F. Grave 5.
