The
Sampford Arundel memorial can be found in the grounds of Holy Cross
Church, Sampford Arundel. It takes the form of a cross with a tapering
shaft, mounted on a three-stepped base; the inscriptions are in raised
lettering mon one side of the steps. There are 65 names for World War
1 (59 are names of those who served, 6 names for those who fell) and
1 for world War 2.

Polygon Wood, Flanders on the 4th October 1917, aged 28 years, whilst
commanding the 9th Battalion, King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
Only son of Major and Mrs R Holford Daniell of Broadleigh. Awarded
the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) and the Military Cross
(M.C.).
There
is a commemorative plaque within the church for this man which also
lists details of the other 5 who died. |
