The
Stratton on the Fosse war memorial is to be found at the junction of
Church Lane, and the A367, Stratton on the Fosse. It takes the form
of a base surmounted by a square plinth, a tapered shaft, and a lantern
cross with figures in the lantern. The inscription is inset on tablets
fixed to the sides of the plinth. On one face can be seen Christ being
crucified on the cross and on another face the figure of St Vigor. The
memorial cost £1,191 14s 6d to build and was unveiled 20th January
1923. There are 9 names listed for World War 1 and 7 names for World
War 2.

that he was born at Combe Down, Somerset; lived at Stratton-on-the-Fosse;

16 Wood Road, Treforest, Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Soldiers Died in
the Great War records that he was born at Stratton-on-the-Fosse;
lived at Chilcompton; and enlisted at Midsomer Norton. He is also
listed on the Stratton-on-the-Fosse War Memorial. Also listed on
the Chilcompton War Memorial. |

surname on the memorial). He died on the 20th March 1917 aged 18,
and is buried at Downside (St Benedict) Roman Catholic Churchyard,
Stratton-on-the-Fosse. Son of Charles and Elizabeth Oborne of St.
Vigors Cottage, Stratton-on-the-Fosse, Somerset. Born at Morstome,
Dorset. He is not listed in Soldiers Died in the Great War. |

in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission register or Soldiers Died
in the Great War. However, he has a recorded date of death during
the December 1915 quarter, Shepton Mallet district; indicating that
he was discharged from the army prior to his death. The National
Archives lists him as Private 51403 Farnham Cyril Flagg, Somerset
Light Infantry. |

register or Soldiers Died in the Great War. However the National
Archives lists a Private 18092 Bernard C. Holder, Grenadier Guards.
There is record of a Bernard C. Holder with a date of death in the
March 1919 quarter, St George Hanover Square district, London’ aged
24; indicating that he was discharged from the army prior to his
death. |

Cahill, SS Empire Impala (London), Merchant Navy. He died on the
11th March 1943 aged 19, and is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial,
London. Son of Thomas James Cahill and Helena Cahill. The Empress
Impala was a steam merchant ship, and part of convoy SC-121 on route
from New York to Hull. She was sunk on the 7th March 1943 by the
U-591 with the loss of 41 lives; there were no survivors. |
