TAUNTON BURMAH 1885-86-87 (BURMA) WAR MEMORIAL
Burmah
1885-6-7 - Detailed information
Compiled and Copyright © Archie Needs 2015
This
Burma War Memorial stands to the north of Market House on the A3027,
Taunton, Somerset . The memorial is to the dead of Prince Albert's Somersetshire
Light Infantry. The memorial commemorates the Third Burmese War 1885-86-87.
It takes the form of an Ashlar Celtic cross with a tapering shaft standing
on a plinth of three high steps, Cross and shaft are decorated with
chubby Celtic detail, mostly interlace with some foliage panels on south
side. Names of main battle honours including Egypt, Burmah, Azim Curh,
and Jellalabad are carved in thick letters towards the base. Full battle
losses given by inset lead letters. It was relocated to its present
location in 1996.
During the Third Anglo-Burmese War (1885–87), Colonel Knox-Leet
commanded the Somerset Light Infantry's 2nd Battalion, of which 144
men lost their lives in battle. Their names are listed on the Burma
Memorial; this was the 2nd Battalion's first operation. Knox-Leet was
eventually promoted to Major General.
