The memorial for Wells stands outside St Cuthbert's Church, St Cuthbert's Street, Wells. It takes the form of a two-stepped octagonal base surmounted by square plinth whit a tapering shaft and lantern cross with bronze figures in it. The inscription is on bronze plaques set into the sides of the plinth and the top step, the whole stands on a paved area. Four knights are in individual niches in the lantern cross and the cross itself is carved with harp symbols, roses, lions rampant and swords of sacrifice. There are 99 names listed for World War 1 and 38 for World War 2. The names here have been sorted into alphabetical order for ease of research and reading.

CHANCELLOR HOLMES’ BEREAVEMENT.

Citizens heard on Wednesday with the deepest regret of the death of Lieut. Basil Scott Holmes, the only son of Chancellor and Mrs. Scott Holmes. It appears that the late Lieut. Holmes, who was 32 years of age, was motor-cycling in London on Tuesday evening, and when at Tooting a motor omnibus ran into the sidecar of a motor-cycle in which he was seated. He was taken to Wandsworth Hospital in a serious condition, and died during the night. These are all the details known to the present. Lieut. Holmes, who was in training with the Norfolk Regiment, was well-known in the city and district, and the deepest sympathy goes out to his widow, two young children, and his parents in their loss.—The funeral will be at noon on Saturday.

Extract from Wells Journal - Friday 10 November 1916, page 8:

THE LATE LIEUT. SCOTT HOLMES

Ald. Tate said that since their last meeting a very sad fatality had happened to Lieut. B. This was agreed to, all the members standing in silence.
