The
Alderton War Memorials can be found inside the parish church and take
the form of plaques. There are 13 names listed for World War 1 on a
black marble plaque with a wooden frame. This plaque was unveiled 3rd
April 1921 by Major Sir George Manners, the masons were Messrs. Letts.
There are 5 names for World War 2 on a wooden plaue which was unveiled
6th January 1949. The World War 2 memorial is
still to be transcribed.

Son of the late Charles and Betsey Gibson, of Alderton. Buried at
Alderton (St Andrew) Churchyard. HMS Arrogant was an old medium
cruiser that had been converted to be a submarine depot ship at
Dover and became the Base Flagship for the Dover Patrol. Able Seaman
Gibson’s death was recorded at Eastry, nr Sandwich, Kent. Eastry
New Hospital was part of the Shorncliffe Royal Military Hospital
command |

Royal Navy. HMS Defence. Died 31/05/1916. Age 40. Son of The Rev
H and Mrs Venn-Ellis of Alderton Rectory. husband of Kathleen Venn-Ellis.
Commemorated on the Plymouth War Memorial. During the Battle of
Jutland, the armoured cruiser HMS Defence was firing at the damaged
SMS Wiesbaden, when she was hit by two heavy salvoes in quick succession.
HMS Defence blew up almost instantaneously, with the loss of all
903 crew. |
