BARTON MILLS WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The Barton Mills War Memorials are to be found within the St Mary's Parish Church, Barton Mills. The first is an alabaster plaque with bronze wreaths and a guilt cross above and bronze wreaths at the sides. There are 14 names for World War 1. This memorial was unveiled by Major-General The Honourable J E Lindley on 26th October 1919. The memorial cost £131 1s 3d, the arhitect was Mr cecil G Hare and the builders were Messrs John Thompson & Sons. The second memorial is a bronze plaque with a wreath and cross above the inscription and wreaths down the sides. There are seven names listed for World War 2. The memorial was unveiled by Colonel W P Cutlack 6th June 1948. It cost £154 13s 8d and was manufactured by Messrs. Hanchets.

Sergeant 35070, "C" Battery, 153rd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action 13th July 1917. Aged 34. Enlisted Kingston-on-Thames, resident Mitcham, London S.W. Son of Albert Edward and Annie Smith; husband of Ada Elizabeth Smith, of Nodds Hall, Tuddenham St. Mary, Mildenhall, Suffolk. Awarded the Military Medal (M.M.). Buried in WHITE HOUSE CEMETERY, ST. JEAN-LES-YPRES, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot I. Row G. Grave 24.

[Listed as Lance Corporal on memorial and as BALLS] Corporal 16988, 8th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry. Died 16 February 1916. Aged 30. Born Freckenham, enlisted Birmingham, resident Milton Hall, Suffolk. Only son of Richard and Rose Ball, of Chalk Hill, Mildenhall, Suffolk; husband of E. Ball, of 22, Ashley Rd., Bradford-on-Avon. Buried in BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, NORD, France. Plot II. Row C. Grave 149.

Lance Corporal 33865, 9th Battalion, Essex Regiment. Killed in action 17th July 1917. Aged 24. Born Newmarket, enlisted and resident Westminster. Son of William and Hannah Munns, of Vine Cottage, Barton Mills, Suffolk; husband of Esther Munns, of The Leicester Home, Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, Norwich. No known grave. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 7.

Lance Corporal 7094, 12th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Killed in action 25th March 1918. Aged 35. Born Elmswell, enlisted Mildenhall. No known grave. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 4.

[Spelt GOODE on CWGC & SDGW] Private 12872, 1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Killed in action 8 May 1915. Aged 19. Born Iken, Suffolk, enlisted Newmarket. In the 1911 census he was single, a Horse Kepper, born Iken, Suffolk, resident Mill Lane, Icklingham, Mildenhall. No known grave. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 21.

Private G/24430, 6th Battalion, Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment). Died at sea 30th December 1917. Aged 29. Born and enlisted Bury St Edmund's, resident Codderham. No known grave. Commmeorated on CHATBY MEMORIAL, Egypt.

Private G/61, 6th Battalion, Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) Died of wounds 2nd July 1918. Aged 23. Born Barton Mills, enlisted Redhill, Surrey, resident Mildenhall (SDGW says Mildon Hall). Only son of Edward and Emily Hockley, of Barton Mills, Mildenhall, Suffolk. Buried in GEZAINCOURT COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Somme, France. Plot I. Row N. Grave 11.

Private 66641, 1st Reserve Garrison Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died in United Kingdom 30th October 1918. Aged 18. Born Barton Mills, enlisted Ipswich or Bury St Edmunds (2 entries on SDGW). Son of Frederick and Jessie Owers, of Barton Mills. Buried near North West boundary in ST. MARY CHURCHYARD, BARTON MILLS, Suffolk.

Died during the Japanese invasion of Malaya and Singapore, mortally wounded at Sengarrang and died of those wounds received 24th January 1942. Aged 25. Buried in KRANJI WAR CEMETERY, Singapore.
