The
War Memorial can be found in the parish church, Butley, and takes the
form of a plaque made from Portland stone. Listed on the memorial are
the names of 87 men who served and returned and 10 men who gave their
lives (these are listed here). The memorial was uveiled on 17th January
1920, it cost £20 raised by public subscription. The architect
was Mr H Munro Cantley. Deatils of the unveiling can be found in the
East Anglian Daily Times 22nd January 1920.

Chatham Naval Memorial. HM Trawler Dhoon was lost when it hit a
mine while on patrol off Yarmouth |

K/35150, Royal Navy – HMS Ettrick. Died 07/07/1917. Age 24. Son
of Mary Anne Mayhew, of Butley. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval
Memorial. There are conflicting records regarding HMS Ettrick –
most records show that she hit a mine on 7 July 1917, lost her bows
and finally sold for scrap in 1919. Other sources show her being
hit by a torpedo from UC-61 on the same day and sinking 15 miles
off Beachy Head |

– Age 20. Son of Mary Smith of Ely Hill, Capel St. Andrews, Woodbridge.
Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. HMS Inflexible was a
17,250 ton battle cruiser. She was acting as Vice Admiral Sackville
Carden’s flagship in the Dardenelles, when on 18/03/1915 she was
bombed and mined sustaining some damage and casualties – including
the death of Stoker Smith. |
