BUTLEY, CAPEL ST ANDREW AND WANTISDEN WAR MEMORIAL

The War Memorial can be found in the parish church, Butley, and takes the form of a plaque made from Portland stone. Listed on the memorial are the names of 87 men who served and returned and 10 men who gave their lives (these are listed here). The memorial was uveiled on 17th January 1920, it cost £20 raised by public subscription. The architect was Mr H Munro Cantley. Deatils of the unveiling can be found in the East Anglian Daily Times 22nd January 1920.

Private 29696, 4th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Died 11/02/1917. Age 30. Son of Samuel Clark of Padley Water, Chillesford. husband of L E C Kersey (formerly Clark), of Butley. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial

GARDINER

Arthur George
Trimmer 5837TS, Royal Naval Reserve – HM Trawler Dhoon. Died 24/11/1916. Age 27. Son of Arthur G Gardiner of Butley. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. HM Trawler Dhoon was lost when it hit a mine while on patrol off Yarmouth

Arthur Abraham
Private 09975, 30th Company, Royal Army Ordnance Corps. Died 24/06/1916. Age 29. Son of William Josiah and Emma Elizabeth Large of Butley. Buried at Butley (St John) Churchyard Extension. Private Large’s death is recorded at Hampstead

MAYHEW

Lewis Reginald
Stoker K/35150, Royal Navy – HMS Ettrick. Died 07/07/1917. Age 24. Son of Mary Anne Mayhew, of Butley. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. There are conflicting records regarding HMS Ettrick – most records show that she hit a mine on 7 July 1917, lost her bows and finally sold for scrap in 1919. Other sources show her being hit by a torpedo from UC-61 on the same day and sinking 15 miles off Beachy Head

Private 201447, “C” Company, 1st/4th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 25/09/1917. Age 20. Son of William and Elizabeth Pettitt of Butley Street, Tunstall. Buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery

Private 14579, 8th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 07/07/1916. Age 21. Son of Alfred and Zipporah J Pettitt of Park Cottage, Wantisden, Tunstall. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial

Lance Corporal 15067, 11th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 22/03/1918. Age 34. Son of Mrs. Harriett Eliza Pettitt (formerly Plant), of Low Corner, Butley, Tunstall. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial

REEVE

William Henry
Lance Corporal 15049, 11th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 29/10/1917. Age 25. Son of Henry and Susan Reeve of Wantisden Corner, nr Tunstall. Buried at Wimereux Communal Cemetery

RICHARDSON

Edward Bertie
Private 20787, 5th Battalion, King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. Died 22/08/1917. Place of birth listed as Capel Green, Suffolk. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial

SMITH

George Samuel
Stoker 1st Class K/15144, Royal Navy – HMS Inflexible. Died 18/03/1915 – Age 20. Son of Mary Smith of Ely Hill, Capel St. Andrews, Woodbridge. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. HMS Inflexible was a 17,250 ton battle cruiser. She was acting as Vice Admiral Sackville Carden’s flagship in the Dardenelles, when on 18/03/1915 she was bombed and mined sustaining some damage and casualties – including the death of Stoker Smith.
