The
War Memorials are situated in the parish church and take the form of
two wooden oak plaques, one for each war. There are eleven names listed
for World War 1, this cost £10 raised by public subscription and
was unveiled 27th November 1919, the plaque was created by Messrs. R
Sillett & Son. There are three names listed on the World War 2 plaque
that was unveiled 5th November 1952.
THIS TABLET IS ERECTED BY THE PEOPLE OF CRATFIELD IN GRATEFUL MEMORY
OF THOSE MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR

1st Class K/20034, Royal Navy. HMS Natal. Died 30/12/1915. Age 20.
Son of George and Ann Girling of Near School, Cratfield. Commemorated
on the Chatham Naval Memorial. The armoured cruiser HMS Natal was
a unit of the 2nd Cruiser squadron. On December 30th 1915, she
was lying in Cromarty harbour when a fire broke out on board. Within
a short time her magazine exploded and she sank almost immediately. Of
her complement of 815 men, 421 were lost |

Seaman J/3993, Royal Navy. HMS Vanguard. Died 09/07/1917. Age 24.
Son of Arthur George Preston of Silverleys Green, Cratfield. Commemorated
on the Chatham Naval Memorial. The battleship HMS Vanguard served
with the Grand Fleet during WWI until the time of her destruction. On
July 9th 1917, whilst at anchor in Scapa Flow, she blew up, killing
all but three of her complement of 670. No cause of the explosion
was ascertained |

Buried at Bethune Town Cemetery. There is some suggestion that
this could, actually be Horace Raymer of 7th Battalion Suffolk Regiment
and the entry is incorrect on the memorial. |

on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. The battlecruiser HMS Indefatigable
was part of the Grand Fleet that engaged the Germa Navy in the Battle
of Jutland. She was sunk in an exchange of gunfire with the German
vessel SMS Von der Tann |

Died 13/06/1944. Age 20. Son of Percy Alan and Mabel Ida Mobbs of
Cratfield. Buried at Jonkerbos War Cemetery. Re-equipped with Lancaster
bombers in 1943, 15 Squadron remained part of No 1 Group's main
bomber force for the remainder of the war |

(Air Gunner) 1883370, 576 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Died 17/03/1945. Buried at Durnbach War Cemetery. 576 Squadron was
formed on 25 November 1943 from C Flight of 103 Squadron at Elsham
Wolds. It began bombing operations with Lancasters on 2 December
and continued this role until the end of the war, as part of the
main force of Bomber Command |
