Hundon war memorial can be found in the grounds of the parish church and takes the form of a Paty Cross on a plinth mounted on a two stepped base, the inscriptions are on the plinth. There are 13 names for World War 1 and 5 for World War 2.

Unmarried, Enlisted 15th March 1916 at Brandon, Canada, height 5 feet 8 inches, girth 40 inches, complexion fair, eyes grey, hair light brown; religion Church of England. PLEDGER

Thomas

Stoker 1st Class K/16235, H.M.S. Invincible, Royal Navy. Lost with his ship at the Battle of Jutland 31st May 1916. Aged 23. Son of George and Jane Pledger, of Church St., Hundon, Clare, Suffolk. No known grave. Commemorated on PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Hampshire. Panel 19.

Note: HMS Invincible was an Invincible Class Battlecruiser built at Elswick, laid down April 1906, completed March 1909, cost £1,767,515. On 6th August 1914 she completed her refit and was dispatched to Queenstown for trade protection duties then on 19th August 1914 she was ordered to return to become the flagship with the 2nd Battlecruiser Squadron. On 28th August 1914 she took part in the Battle of Heligoland Bight and in September 1914 she was transferred to 1st Battlecruiser Squadron. In October 1914 she rejoined 2nd Battlecruiser Squadron. On 4th November she was ordered to South American waters to hunt Admiral Graf Spee and on 11th November 1914, after short refit at Devonport, she set sail as the flagship of Vice-Admiral Sturdee. The 8th December 1914 saw her involved in the Battle of the Falkland Islands and on 16th December 1914 she left the Falkland Islands for home. From January to February 1915 she had a refit at Gibraltar and then joined 3rd Battlecruiser Squadron. On 31st May 1916 she sunk by SMS Derfflinger and Lützow at the Battle of Jutland but she did inflict fatal damage on Lützow.

Private 18254, 7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died of wounds 27th February 1916. Aged 29. Born Hunden (sic), enlisted Clare. Son of Thomas and Amy Rogers, of Hundon, Clare, Suffolk. Buried in BETHUNE TOWN CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot V. Row A. Grave 41.

Driver CHT/254, No. 3 Base Horse Transport Depot, Royal Army Service Corps. Died 25th December 1918. Son of Mr. H. Starling, of Church St., Hundon, Clare, Suffolk. Buried in MIKRA BRITISH CEMETERY, KALAMARIA, Greece. Grave 1159.

Private 34861, 11th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Killed in action 22nd October 1917. Aged 24. Born Hundon, enlisted Clare. Son of Allen and Sarah Taylor, of Church St., Hundon, Clare, Suffolk. No known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 40 to 41 and 162 to 162A.

Private 5831015, 2nd Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment. Died during the invasion of Singapore by the Japanese 14th February 1942. Aged 22. Son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Mallion, of Hundon, Suffolk; husband of Sylvia Decimore Mallion, of Hundon. No known grave. Commemorated on SINGAPORE MEMORIAL., Kranji War Cemetery, SIngapore. Column 59.

MANSFIELD

George [Thomas]

Private 5836846, 5th Battalion, Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment. Died 20th May 1944. Aged 26. Son of George and Amelia Mansfield, of Hundon, Suffolk. Buried in CASSINO WAR CEMETERY, Italy. Plot VIII. Row B. Grave 21.

MISSEN

Jack Henry

Able Seaman C/JX 315217, H.M.S. Samphire, Royal NAvy. Died 30th January 1943. Aged 21. Son of William Robert and Kate Mary Missen, of Hundon, Suffolk. No known grave. Commemorated on CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, Kent. Panel 69, Column 2.

Note: H.M.S. Samphire was a Corvette (925t), built at Smith's Docks and launched 14th April 1941 (K128). She was torpedoed and sunk by the Italian submarine 'Platino' off Bougie on 30th January 1943.

SMITH

Donald [Orris]

Stoke 1st Class C/KX 110962, H.M.S. Goodall, Royal Navy. Died 29th April 1945. Aged 33. Son of George William and Blanche Emily Smith; husband of Gladys Gertrude Smith, of Hundon, Suffolk. No known grave. Commemorated on CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL, Kent. Panel 81, Column 2.

Note: H.M.S. Goodall was a Frigate (K 479) built by Boston Navy Yard (Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.), laid down 20th May 1943, launched 8th July 1943, commissioned 4th April 1943. HMS Goodall (Lt.Cdr. J.V. Fulton, RNVR) was torpedoed and sunk at 22:00 hours on 29 April 1945 in position 69.25N, 33.38E by U-286. Just an hour before Goodall was was sunk she was missed with a gnat torpedo fired by U-968.
