The
memorial is in the form of a clipsham stone column, with the figure
of St Michael on top, on a square block with three six sided steps.
The are nine names for World War 1 and four for World War 2. The memorial
was originally dedicated on 8th February 1920 by the Bishop of St Edmundsbury
and Ipswich, the money was raised by public subscription, the builders
were Messrs. Clary & Wright and the architect was Mr WIlliam Douglas
Caroe. Details can be found in the East Anglian Daily Times 10th February
1920.

Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City Of London Regiment). Killed in
action 20 September 1917. Aged 24. Born Monk Soham, Suffolk. Resident
Bealings. Son of David. and Betsy Moyes, of Martlesham Rd, Bealings,
Woodbridge, Suffolk. Joined Great Eastern Railway 13 July 1914,
General Labourer, Civil Engineering Department. Enlisted 13 March
1917 in Ipswich. Formerly 23645, 3rd Battalion, The Buffs (East
Kent Regiment). In the 1911 census he was aged 17, born Monk Soham,
Suffolk, a Blacksmith, resident with his parents, David and Betsy
Moyes, at Martlesham Bealings, Little Bealings, Suffolk. No known
grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Officer (Pilot) 36223, 115 Squadron, Royal Air Force. Died 12/04/1940.
Age 26. Son of Arthur Thomas Barber and Priscilla Thurza Barber.
Buried at Stavanger (Eiganes) Churchyard. 115 Squadron was re-formed
as a bomber squadron in 1937 and in the Second World War took part
in scores of raids and also played an active part in Gardening (minelaying)
for victory. In April 1940, while flying Wellingtons (and while
on temporary loan to Coastal Command) it gained the distinction
of making the RAF's first bombing raid of the war on a mainland
target-the enemy-held Norwegian airfield of Stavanger/Sola |

Seaman P/JX 291648, Royal Navy – HMS Airedale. Died 15/06/1942.
Age 21. Son of Hendrik and Margery Spruytenburg. Commemorated on
the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. The destroyer HMS Airedale was bombed
by Stuka dive-bombers in the Eastern Mediterranean while on convoy
escort duty to Malta. Heavily damaged and with 44 of her crew dead,
she was abandoned and sunk by HMS Aldenham |

Officer (Pilot) 124799, 114 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer
Reserve. Died 19/09/1943. Age 20. Son of Charles Hallewell Steele
and Elsie Joyce Steele of Waldringfield. Buried at Naples War Cemetery.
In November 1942, 114 Squadron re-equipped with Blenheim Vs, was
posted to North Africa to give air support to the First Army in
Operation Torch. In April 1943 the Squadron converted to Bostons
and moved to Sicily, moving on to Italy in October. Here the Squadron
attacked enemy communications and airfields until the end of the
war, before moving to Aden in September 1945 and starting to convert
to Mosquitoes. |
