During Operation Michael, the Battle of St Quentin, first phase
battle of the Somme 1918. On 21st March Harold was in the 61st
Machine Gun Corps, when heavy German shellfire hit all areas of
the British lines at 04:40; the main attack was between Arras
and St Quentin; the German infantry attacked at 07:00 and the
forward zone (the 61st) was quickly overwhelmed and almost lost
completely.
