RENDLESHAM WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The Rendlesham war memorial can be found at the parish church and takes the form of a Portland stone plaque as a pediment with two supporting pillars. It contains the name of 8 men who gave their lives during World War 1. It was unveiled on 21st March 1920, the dedication being by Canon W T Farmiloe. The memorial was sponsored by local businesses at a cost of £35; the mason was Mr E E Saunders.

Private 2657, Shropshire Yeomanry. Died 30/01/1918. Age 25. Son of Bob and Alice Maria Austin of Friday Street, Rendlesham. Buried at Rendlesham (St Gregory the Great) Churchyard. Private Austin’s death is recorded at Plomesgate

Driver T1/4715, 433rd Company, Army Service Corps. Died 19/02/1918. Age 31. Born Woodbirdge. Buried at Woodbridge Cemetery. Driver Benham’s death is recorded at Farnham

Private 15287, "B" Company, 7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 03/07/1916. Age 19. Son of William and Elizabeth Plant of Friday Street, Rendlesham. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial

Thomas William

Private 90792, 9th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby egiment). Died 11/10/1918. Age 30. Son of Henry and Jane Rogers, of Rendlesham Park, Woodbridge. Commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial. Also commemorated on the Campsea Ashe War Memorial

Private 050446, No 10 Section (Burscough), Royal Army Ordnance Corps. Died 22/11/1919. Age 20. Son of George Smith of 211 Hollesley Road, Rendlesham. Buried at Tincourt New British Cemetery. Private Smith is also commemorated on the Eyke War Memorial. On the Rendlesham War Memorial, Private Smith is listed as belonging to the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry

Corporal 8523, 1st Battalion, Norfolk Regiment. Died 09/11/1914. Born Eyke. Commemorated on Le Touret Memorial. Corporal Smith is also commemorated on the Eyke Memorial
