The
Saxtead war memorial is in the form of a roughly hewn Latin Cross with
a two-stepped base. There are seven names for World War 1 and three
for World War 2. The original memorial dedication was 4th July 1920
by Canon R Abbay. Details appeared in the Suffolk Chronicle and Mercury
9th July 1920.

26. Son of Alfred and Ellen Goddard of Perry's Farm, Saxtead. Buried
at Gillingham (Woodlands) Cemetery.
HMS
Ettrick was a Destroyer and part of the Home Fleet based at Chatham.
On 3rd September 1917, Chatham Naval Barracks were bombed by the
Germans and a naval dead were subsequently buried at Gillingham’s
Woodlands Cemetery |
