War 1 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

Shelland
war memorial lists only men who died in World War 1 and there were probably
no casulaties for World War 2. The memorial is to be found in the parish
church and takes the form of a wooden frame with a brass plaque inset.
There are five names listed for World War 1 only. The plaque was unveiled
by Sir Courtenay Warner 26 September 1920. Details appeared in the East
Anglian Daily Times 1 October 1920.

draft for BEF (Lewis Gunner) 25 September 1916, joined Hood Battalion
19 November 1916 until his death. Son of Rachael Crosse, of Shelland
Hall, Woolpit, Bury St. Edmunds; husband of Gambers Crosse, of
Great Bardfield, Braintree, Essex. No known grave. Commemorated
on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 1 A. |

Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. Died of wounds 8 October 1915.
Aged 20. Born Whitechapel, London, enlisted Darlington, resident
Richmond. Son of Harry and Eliza Brett, of Harleston Green, Stowmarket,
Suffolk. In the 1911 census he is listed as James Brett, the son
of Harry & Eliza Brett, unmarried, aged 17, Farm Labourer,
born Islington, London, resident Shelland, Woolpit, Suffolk. Buried
in SAILLY-SUR-LA-LYS CANADIAN CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France.
