STOKE
BY CLARE WAR MEMORIAL
World War 1 & 2 - Roll
of Honour with detailed information

The
memorial is on the main road through Stoke by Clare and adjacent to
the old village primary school, now the Nursery School of Stoke by Clare
College and opposite the village green, located in grassed area, hedged
to all sides, at Lower Green, The Street, Stoke By Clare. Rather weathered
with a lot of lichen, making the names hard to read in places. It takes
the form of an obelisk set on a square plinth, with two steps, and a
base. The memorial was dedicated by the Bishop of St Edmundsbury and
Ipswich and unveiled by Field Marshall Sir William R Robertson, Bart.,
GCB., GCMG. KCVO, DSO on 23 January 1921. Details appeared in the East
Anglian Daily Times 25 January 1921. There are 27 names listed for World
War 1 and 3 for World War 2. The names of the fallen are on the front
of the memorial and to each side are the names of those who also served,
39 names on one side,41 on the other. Interestingly the names of those
‘also served’ have their ranks included, Privates having
names only, Frank
Meekins name is hard to make out as it has been amended and that section
of stone has been replaced with an infill.
