WITNESHAM WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is to be found on Village Street, Witnesham and takes the form of a Celtic cross made of stone on a stepped base in a small corner plot on the approach to the Parish Church. There are 13 names for World War 1 and 3 for World War 2 plus 1 man for Cyprus. There is also a mmeorial within Witnesham Parish Church, Church Lane, Witnesham, which takes the form of a grey marble on black background plaque listing those who died in the First World War (13 names) and the Second World War (3 names).

Captain 68093, 4th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Killed in action during the Japanese invasion of Singapore 13 February 1942. Aged 27. Born Lincolnshire, resident Suffolk. Son of James Arthur and Emily Florence Brown; husband of Cynthia Joyce Brown (nee Newdick) of Witnesham, Suffolk. His brother John Anderson Brown also died on service. Married Cynthia J Newdick in the June to September Quarter 1937 in the Thetford Registration District, Norfolk. Originally buried at Bukit Brown (overlooking the house), map reference 822135. Grave lost. Commemorated on the Singapore Memorial, Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore. Column 53.
